Home charging is safe for daily use in India, but a few sensible precautions make it even more so. Modern EVs include onboard protection circuits against voltage fluctuations, overcharging, and short circuits. However, India’s power supply in many areas can be inconsistent – voltage surges and brownouts are not uncommon.
Installing a dedicated EV charging socket with a built-in MCB (miniature circuit breaker) and surge protector is strongly recommended, especially if your area experiences frequent power fluctuations. If you are using a portable charger that plugs into a standard 5-amp socket, ensure the socket and wiring are in good condition and rated for continuous load – chargers draw power for several hours, which old or underrated wiring may not handle safely.
During monsoon, avoid charging in areas where the charger or socket could be exposed to standing water. Keep the charging port area dry. Never charge with a damaged cable or charger. With these basic precautions in place, millions of Indian EV owners charge at home daily without incident.
