Electric scooters handle hilly terrain well – in many ways better than petrol scooters of comparable displacement. The key advantage is instant torque: an electric motor delivers its maximum torque from zero RPM, meaning it pulls confidently up inclines without the rev-building delay of a petrol engine.
Models like the Ather 450X and Ola S1 Pro perform admirably on steep urban flyovers, parking ramps, and even moderate ghat sections.
That said, there are two things to factor in. First, climbing steep gradients consistently draws significantly more power from the battery, so your real-world range on hilly routes will be noticeably lower – plan accordingly. Second, on longer, continuous ghats, monitor the battery temperature; sustained high-load riding generates heat that some EVs manage better than others.
For routine hilly city commutes in places like Pune, Shimla, or parts of Bengaluru, electric scooters are a very capable choice.
