The running cost difference between an electric and petrol motorcycle in India is one of the most compelling financial arguments for going electric.
At current fuel prices, a petrol bike averaging 45–50 km/l costs roughly ₹3–4 per km to run. An equivalent electric motorcycle, charged at home on typical Indian domestic tariffs, costs approximately ₹0.80–1.20 per km. For someone riding 50 km per day – a common urban commute – that translates to a daily saving of ₹100–150, or roughly ₹3,000–4,500 per month. Over a year, that is ₹36,000–50,000 in fuel savings alone.
Add near-zero servicing costs – no engine oil, no spark plugs, no fuel filters – and the annual savings easily cross ₹40,000–55,000 for a typical daily rider. For delivery executives or ride-hailing partners covering 100+ km per day, the economics are even more dramatically in favour of electric, with many reporting payback periods of under 18 months on the higher upfront cost.
