In many Indian states, yes — and this exemption can save you a significant amount on the on-road price of your vehicle. Road tax on petrol vehicles typically ranges from 8% to 20% of the ex-showroom price depending on the state. For an electric car priced at ₹15 lakh, that is ₹1.2 lakh to ₹3 lakh in road tax alone.
States like Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan either fully waive or significantly reduce road tax and registration fees for EVs. Delhi, for instance, offers complete road tax exemption for five years. Maharashtra provides full road tax exemption indefinitely. Gujarat waives both road tax and registration for EVs.
These exemptions stack on top of central PM E-DRIVE subsidies and lower GST, making the combined government support for EV buyers in these states genuinely substantial — often totalling well over ₹1–2 lakh in savings on a mid-range electric car.
