Aprilia Electric Scooter To Enter The Mass Market
Piaggio, the Italian automaker, is preparing for a major change in its Indian two-wheeler strategy, with a new mass-market electric scooter planned for 2027. Until now, the brand’s scooter business in India was focused on premium products under the Vespa and Aprilia nameplates. The upcoming range, however, will target a considerably broader section of the market – the budget buyers.
Piaggio Chairman, CEO and Managing Director Diego Graffi revealed that the brand is targeting the Rs 85,000–Rs 1.30 lakh price bracket, with higher-spec electric versions positioned towards the upper end. That would put the upcoming EV directly into one of India’s most competitive electric scooter segments.
New Platform Developed Specifically For India
Rather than simply converting one of its existing petrol scooters into an EV, Piaggio is developing an entirely new platform. The architecture has been designed with an electric powertrain in consideration from the beginning, which might help the manufacturer optimise cost, range and performance. Interestingly, the same architecture will also support a 125cc petrol engine, allowing Piaggio to develop multiple scooters from the same platform.
Earlier reports indicated that Piaggio plans to introduce an entire commuter scooter family rather than a single model, with the first products expected during H1 2027. Final battery capacity, motor output, range and charging specifications haven’t been announced yet.
No Electric Vespa For Now
One thing Piaggio has ruled out is an electric Vespa for India, at least for now and in the immediate future. According to Graffi, the existing Vespa architecture doesn’t allow achieving the required combination of range, performance and competitive pricing. That means Piaggio’s initial mass-market EV strategy will instead revolve around the newly developed platform with Aprilia.
This is significant because an electric Vespa may have been the obvious choice from a branding perspective, but Piaggio appears to be prioritising volume and affordability over simply converting an existing premium product to electric.
Could Take On iQube, Chetak And Vida
A price between Rs 85,000 and Rs 1.30 lakh would place the new scooter against some of India’s biggest electric two-wheeler names. For context, models such as the TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, and Vida VX2. Also, Ather’s more affordable, newly launched Konarc might be a worthy competitor for this Aprilia.
Our latest electric scooter sales analysis shows just how concentrated this market has become around TVS, Bajaj, Hero and Ather. Piaggio will therefore need more than Italian styling to stand out. Range, charging convenience, dealer reach and after-sales support will likely play a much larger role.
India To Become An Export Base
The new scooter won’t necessarily remain an India-only product. Piaggio currently exports around 10–20% of its Indian two-wheeler production, depending on the product, but wants to eventually increase that to around 50%.
It has already successfully used India as an export hub for its popular motorcycles, such as the Aprilia RS 457 and Tuono 457. According to Graffi, the upcoming scooter platform is also being developed with overseas markets, including Europe, in mind.
SearchEV Says
Piaggio entering the affordable electric scooter segment could be much more significant than simply another EV launch. At Rs 85,000–Rs 1.30 lakh, the upcoming Aprilia electric scooter would compete directly with the best-seller rather than occupying a niche premium category.
More importantly, developing the platform specifically around Indian requirements could give Piaggio a better chance of controlling costs than adapting an existing Vespa or Aprilia product. For now, though, the most important details — battery capacity, claimed range, motor performance and final branding remain undisclosed.
