India’s electric car market had a tougher August, where the top 10 brands recorded a sale of 34,556 units, compared with 39,653 units in July. This is a 12.67% decrease in Month-on-Month (MoM) sales. Despite the overall fall, the market wasn’t uniformly weak. Hyundai Motors, VinFast and Toyota had strong monthly growth, while several of the biggest EV manufacturers saw significant declines in their sales.

Tata Continues To Dominate The Charts, Followed By Mahindra And MG Motors
Tata Electric has retained its ‘best-seller’ crown and still sits at the top of the sales chart, registering 12,980 units in August 2026. However, sales declined by 9.22% compared with July’s 14,298 units. Even with the decline, Tata remained comfortably ahead of its competition, with more than twice the sales of the second-placed Mahindra Electric. Also, Tata launched the new Tata Sierra EV in India earlier this year, so we could see a sales surge this festive season.
Even the second and third-ranked manufacturers weren’t immune to this August slowdown. Mahindra Electric recorded 6,164 units, down 17.11% from July, while MG Motors registered 4,568 units, down by 22.98%. Despite these declines, both manufacturers retained their positions in the list. But recently we saw some very interesting launches from these brands, like the new Mahindra XEV 9S, which now comes with captain seats for better comfort, and the 2026 MG Hector Tomahawk EV, which was launched in India at Rs 19.49 lakh (ex-showroom). So, these new cars might boost sales for Mahindra and MG Motors India in the upcoming months. Also, the festive season is just around the corner, which might be even more fruitful for these brands.
Hyundai and VinFast Are The Biggest Gainers
While most of the leading manufacturers had declining sales, Hyundai Motors and VinFast chose the opposite direction. Hyundai sold 797 units in August, up from 591 units in July 2026. This is a 34.86% increase in sales numbers, allowing it to move a position upwards.
VinFast was among the largest gainers in the top 10 EV sales list, with an impressive 43.53% increase. The Vietnamese EV maker recorded a sale of 2,196 units this August, compared with 1,530 units in July. With this massive boost, VinFast now occupies the fourth position in the list. What we think contributed to this surge is the new VinFast Limo Green that came to India a while ago.
Maruti Suzuki Drops To Fifth
Maruti Suzuki’s position weakened despite remaining among the top five. It sold 1,391 EVs in August, down from 1,665 units in July. Its sales declined by 16.46%, causing it to fall from fourth to fifth place, losing out to VinFast.
Kia India Edges Past BYD
Kia India had a relatively stable month, selling 637 units, compared with 606 units in July. This 5.12% growth was enough to move it from eighth to seventh place, pushing BYD down the list. This was despite Kia’s relatively small volumes compared with the market leaders.
Toyota Pushes Out Mercedes From The List; BMW Still Going Strong
While the other manufacturers are constantly launching new products and giving out offers and schemes, Toyota, with its sole product – the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella E3 – has been doing quite well. Toyota pushed Mercedes-Benz out of the top 10 list and now occupies the last spot.
The Japanese manufacturer sold 161 units in August 2026, registering a 29.84% growth. But only the E3 variant of the Urban Cruiser Ebella is available for sale as of now, and the E1 and E2 are yet to be launched in India, which we think could happen soon this festive season, as the demand for Toyota electric cars is quite good.
Also, BMW has been selling EVs consistently in India and retained the second-to-last position, just above Toyota. But, if Toyota launches the remaining variants of the Ebella, which are even more affordable than E3, we might see BMW slide below it in the list.

August was a mixed month for India’s electric car market. The overall sales number fell sharply by 12.67%, but some manufacturers bucked the trend. Tata Electric remains the undisputed leader, with 12,980 units, while Mahindra Electric and MG Motors continue to occupy second and third place.
The more interesting movement came further down the list, where VinFast jumped to fourth, with a 43.53% monthly sales increase, while Hyundai also showed a strong 34.86% improvement in MoM sales.
At the other end, BYD and BMW suffered declines of more than 32%, with BYD losing two positions. And Mercedes getting pushed out of the list by Toyota, which showed us that demand for the premium electric segment is still questionable.
Also, the festive season for 2026 is just around the corner, where we might see some major changes in this list, as buyers and manufacturers are quite enthusiastic about the new EVs that are recently launched, announced, or are slated to be released shortly.
