Introduction
Honda Cars India is officially breaking past the mass-market ceiling. Unveiled alongside the refreshed City sedan, the highly anticipated Honda ZR-V Hybrid has made its official Indian debut. The ZR-V Hybrid will operate as the brand’s new flagship vehicle in India. It will be imported via the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route in limited numbers and will double up as a brand-building exercise in India.
Honda has opened the pre-bookings today, while actual deliveries will start in the latter half of July. We expect Honda to place the ZR-V Hybrid in the Rs 40-50 lakh premium SUV segment with its unique blend of instant electric torque, extensive safety hardware, and staggering fuel efficiency.
Honda ZR-V Hybrid: Powertrain and Specs
The crossover silhouette of the ZR-V Hybrid sneaks Honda’s acclaimed e-CVT hybrid system. By pairing a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with a robust electric drive motor, the ZR-V delivers 181 bhp and 315 Nm of torque. This configuration allows the 4,568 mm long SUV to sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in 7.9 seconds before topping out at an electronically limited top speed of 173 kmph.
However, it’s clear that the powertrain’s key motive is maximising real-world mileage. The powertrain can seamlessly cycle between pure EV mode in low-speed traffic and the combustion engine kicking in when more punch is required. The Honda ZR-V SUV claims a decent fuel efficiency of 22.8 kmpl, effectively lowering the heavy running costs typically associated with this segment.
Honda ZR-V Hybrid: Design and Cabin
Design-wise, the ZR-V Hybrid doesn’t completely follow the typical upright stance of traditional SUVs. It features a rather low-slung stance which is further characterised by a sculpted hood, a gloss-black grille with vertical slats, and sharp L-shaped LED headlamps equipped with sequential indicators. Flush roof rails, 18-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels, and dual exhaust finishers further emphasise its sporty intent.
Stepping inside, the cabin is wrapped in a black leather motif contrasted by subtle pearl finishes. Honda’s “man maximum, machine minimum” philosophy dictates the interior packaging. Despite a sloping roofline, the 2,657 mm wheelbase ensures generous passenger legroom. Dropping the second row opens up a cavernous, perfectly flat 1,313 litres of boot space.
Key Features and Safety Standards
Operating in a premium space, the key highlight of the Honda ZR-V Hybrid in terms of equipment includes a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch free-standing central touchscreen display. Premium touches include a 12-speaker Bose surround sound system, a power tailgate with a hands-free walk-away close function, memory-equipped power seats, and a sleek electronic gear selector mounted on the high-deck center console.
Safety remains a prioritised metric. Built on Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, the vehicle comes armed with an eight-airbag setup and the full Honda Sensing Level 2 ADAS suite, providing active mitigation systems like lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and autonomous collision mitigation braking.
For years, the Indian premium SUV space has been heavily dominated by diesel engines and thirsty turbo-petrols. By introducing the ZR-V Hybrid as an exclusive CBU import, Honda is leveraging its global hybrid expertise to offer a highly efficient alternative.
