Lucid Partners with Nvidia to Launch Level 4 Self-Driving Mid-Size EV

Lucid Partners with Nvidia

Lucid Group announced plans to launch a Level 4 self-driving mid-size EV, powered by NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor chips, to compete with Tesla Model Y and Rivian R2.

Lucid Group has just revealed plans to launch this new mid-size electric vehicle (EV) with Level 4 self-driving capability. The announcement was made on Tuesday, October 29, 2025; nevertheless, the summary does not contain any explicit mention of the auto launch schedule but represents the company’s next giant leap in its veil of advancement.

While launching the model, Lucid will target global markets and varying geographies as part of its strategy to increase EV volumes across the globe. This would broaden Lucid’s portfolio beyond its luxury sedans into a much larger and higher-volume market segment and exponentially increase the leap towards AI-based autonomous driving technology.

New EV Segment

Lucid’s new car is a mid-size electric vehicle that is supposed to have a more responsive character than its present flagship luxury Lucid Air sedan. This new car will be more compact and less expensive than the Air, thus targeting a broader and at the same time higher-volume market segment. The strategy aims to give the company a far deeper penetration in the market beyond the niche luxury category.

Nvidia Powers Autonomy

The advanced driving systems of the car will be fed with Nvidia’s DRIVE AGX Thor chips. Hence, the EV is established to have achieved Level 4 autonomy, which stipulates the car being able to drive independently, devoid of inputs or monitoring by a driver, under most conditions. Among the highest automation levels, close to fully automated, or Level 5, technology is currently under research by automakers.

Advanced Sensor Fusion

To make the Nvidia Level 4 self-driving capabilities possible, Lucid relies on a sophisticated set of combinatory sensors, unlike its competitor Tesla, which employs cameras only for its sensor system. Lucid’s system will entail the fusion of cameras, radar, and lidar for this purpose. This multi-sensor approach is intended to enhance safety and reliability through redundancy and complete environmental awareness for AI-based driving.

Competing with Tesla

The new mid-size EV is positioned to target one of the two best-selling electric vehicles within this segment. It is specifically pertinent to the two brands: Tesla’s best-selling Model Y and Rivian’s R2 SUV. With the provision of Level 4 autonomy and attractive price-performance positioning below the Air, Lucid will be able to capture a significant proportion of the rapidly growing premium mid-size EV market.

Production Efficiency

Apart from driving systems for the vehicle, the partnership with Nvidia involves Lucid’s manufacturing process. Lucid intends to utilise Nvidia’s toolkit in its factories to improve production quality and accelerate the manufacturing process, addressing common challenges associated with scaling up EV production.
