Exterior Design

The EX90 carries Volvo’s clean, minimalist design, with HD Pixel LED headlights and Thor’s Hammer DRLs. Since there’s no grille, a body-coloured panel with the Volvo emblem sits up front. Moreover, flush door handles with ground lighting and frameless mirrors keep the sides smooth. It rides on 21-inch diamond-cut alloys, and gets welcome and farewell light animations. On top, an electrochromic panoramic roof switches from clear to frosted at the touch of a button.

Cabin and Seats

Inside, two-tone Nappa leather and Light Ash décor create a calm, Scandinavian feel. The front seats adjust electrically with memory, and offer heating, ventilation and a 10-point massage. In the second row, two captain’s chairs slide and recline for long-distance comfort. However, they miss electric adjustment, ventilation and massage. Meanwhile, the third row suits children or short trips, and gets its own air conditioning.

Volvo EX90 Infotainment and Sound

A 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen runs Google built-in, with Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Play Store. Google Maps also shows nearby chargers. Behind the wheel, a slim 9-inch driver display pairs with a head-up display. Furthermore, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 5G connectivity and over-the-air updates come standard. Sound comes from a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system, and built-in microphones let front passengers talk easily with those in the back.

Convenience Features

The EX90 gets four-zone climate control and an air purifier with PM2.5 filtration. Among the Volvo EX90 features, Digital Key Plus stands out, letting you unlock the car with a phone, smartwatch or key card. In addition, soft-close doors, a hands-free power tailgate and up to six USB-C ports add everyday ease. The Volvo Cars app also lets you pre-cool the cabin remotely. For luggage, a 46-litre frunk and an underfloor boot compartment add useful space.

Volvo EX90 Safety and ADAS

Safety is the EX90’s biggest strength. It gets nine airbags, Volvo’s WHIPS and SIPS protection, and a reinforced battery enclosure. A Driver Understanding System monitors driver attention, while an occupant sensing system reminds you if someone is left in the car. For driving, Pilot Assist combines adaptive cruise control with steering help. Moreover, pedestrian, cyclist and scooter collision avoidance, emergency steering assist and a door opening alert come standard. Park Pilot Assist can also park the car automatically.

Before You Buy

The EX90 is packed with features, but a few gaps remain. Second-row passengers miss ventilated and massage seats, and there are no rear window sunshades. In addition, most controls sit inside the touchscreen, which takes time to learn. It brings far more luxury than the compact Volvo EX30, and competes closely with the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV on comfort and safety.
