Thar.e: The off-road legend goes green as Mahindra readies its rebirth in an electric avatar

The upcoming Thar.e represents a quantum leap in Mahindra’s EV ambitions, reinventing the brand’s iconic 4×4 lineage in an advanced zero-emission architecture.

      Mahindra Thar.e Reveiled
      Key Highlights
      • Mahindra is preparing to pull the plug on internal combustion exclusivity for its most iconic lifestyle SUV.
      • To ensure it does not lose its off-road pedigree, the Thar.e is expected to feature a towering ground clearance, with reports suggesting it could sit as high as 300mm off the ground.
      • It features squared LED headlamps, a distinct closed-off front fascia with "Thar.e" badging, heavy-duty skid plates, and chunky all-terrain tyres.
      • Current industry estimates project the Mahindra Thar.e to officially launch in India around late 2026 or early 2027.

Mahindra is preparing to pull the plug on internal combustion exclusivity for its most iconic lifestyle SUV. The Thar.e concept first hit the headlines in August 2023, when Mahindra stole the show in Cape Town, South Africa, and now it is steadily marching toward production. Shedding its traditional ladder-frame chassis for a born-ev architecture, the Thar.e promises a combination of silent, emission-free driving with the go-anywhere ruggedness that defined its forefathers.

      The Skateboard EV Architecture

The biggest fundamental shift for the Thar.e is what lies beneath the floorboard. The SUV will be built on Mahindra’s customised INGLO-P1 skateboard EV platform. This dedicated electric architecture allows the vehicle to transition into a highly practical 5-door SUV body style.

To ensure it does not lose its off-road pedigree, the Thar.e is expected to feature a towering ground clearance, with reports suggesting it could sit as high as 300mm off the ground.

      Powertrain, Battery, and Range

When it comes to performance, Mahindra is apparently going all out. The carmaker is likely to offer a dual-motor setup, with one on each axle to create an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.

A large battery pack, expectedly in the range between 60 and 80 kWh, will be feeding these motors. With an ideal real-world driving range of 350 to 450 km on a single charge, this arrangement is expected to mitigate range anxiety during long-distance trail adventures. The Thar.e is additionally expected to offer advanced DC fast charging, which might enable it to charge from 0% to 80% in less than 60 minutes, just like the other Born Electric SUVs Mahindra has shown us.

      Design and Interior Tech

Visually, the Thar.e departs from its classic round-eyed look, to now, what seems like a retro-futuristic aesthetic. It features squared LED headlamps, a distinct closed-off front fascia with “Thar.e” badging, heavy-duty skid plates, and chunky all-terrain tyres.

Inside, we expect the cabin to be a great combination of rugged, old-school charm alongside modern tech that we have come to associate with Mahindra’s new portfolio of cars. Drivers can expect a minimalist, straight-laced dashboard dominated by a large, centre-mounted touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital driver’s display. Keeping true to its adventurous roots, the interior is anticipated to utilise washable and removable materials, heavily incorporating recycled elements for a sustainable touch.

      Launch Timeline and Expected Pricing

While EV enthusiasts are eager to get behind the wheel, the wait will be slightly longer. Current industry estimates project the Mahindra Thar.e to officially launch in India around late 2026 or early 2027.

Due to its advanced electric drivetrain, larger dimensions, and sophisticated EV platform, the Thar.e will sit significantly higher on the price ladder than its ICE counterpart. The electric SUV is expected to be priced in the range of ₹20 lakh to ₹25 lakh (ex-showroom). Once it hits the market, it will compete directly with the Tata Harrier EV (QWD), though the Thar.e would be much-more off-road focused than the Tata SUV.
