New BYD Plug-In Hybrid SUV Confirmed for India

BYD Seal U Confirmed

Quick Reads

  • Seal U to be the first plug-in hybrid coming by the end of 2026 from BYD
  • BYD’s DM-i hybrid system uses a 18.3 kWh Blade battery with a 1.5-litre petrol engine
  • Pure electric range of up to 70 km; combined range of over 1,200 km.

Introduction

After acquiring a fair share of the premium electric vehicle market in India, BYD is now going a level deeper. Essentially leveraging the middle ground between a pure combustion engine and a battery electric vehicle, the Chinese EV giant is now introducing a premium hybrid SUV. Unlike the mainstream hybrid options that we have currently available in India, this is a proper plug-in hybrid system, which is a first for not only the BYD brand in India but also for the sub-Rs 1 crore market.

What BYD calls the DM-i Hybrid system essentially uses an 18.3 kWh Blade battery alongside an internal combustion engine. The first vehicle to feature this tech in India will be the BYD Seal U (also known as the Sealion 6 in many international markets). Pricing for the Seal U DM-i plug-in hybrid SUV is expected to be around the Rs 40 – 50 lakh price bracket.

The Seal U: A Familiar Face with a New Heart

The Seal U made its initial appearance in India at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Expo under the “Sealion 6” moniker. Dimensionally, it is a proper mid-size SUV, comparable to something like the Mahindra XEV 9S. The Seal U measures 4.7 metres in length with a 2,765 mm wheelbase and seating for five occupants. Inside, buyers can expect BYD’s signature tech-forward layout, anchored by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch centre-mounted rotatable infotainment screen. It will also feature tech like Level 2 ADAS.

Decoding the DM-i Technology

The core differentiator of the Seal U is its Dual Mode Intelligent (DM-i) plug-in hybrid system. Unlike conventional hybrids from brands like Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, which utilise a petrol-first philosophy where the electric motor merely assists the engine, BYD flips the equation. The DM-i is fundamentally electric-first.

This means that most of the time the vehicle will run like a regular pure electric car, operating on battery power alone. This gives you the same refined driving experience that you typically get from an EV. Often, the petrol engine will kick in only to act as a generator for electric power, thereby functioning more like a range extender.

The setup pairs an 18.3 kWh Blade battery with dual electric motors and a 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine. BYD notes that this Xiaoyun petrol engine achieves a world-class thermal efficiency of 43.04 %. In simple terms, a high thermal efficiency means that the petrol engine is more efficient in converting the fuel to usable energy. To put numbers into perspective, the petrol is claimed (under NEDC testing conditions) to consume about 4.8 litres of fuel only for every 100 kms the vehicle operates.

Seamless Driving Modes and V2L Capability

The vehicle operates across three distinct modes that shuffle automatically without driver intervention.

  • EV Mode: This is the mode that the car will operate in during a bulk of city driving. In this mode, the SUV will run solely on battery power, which has been made possible for up to 70 km.
  • Series Hybrid Mode: In this mode the internal combustion petrol engine will kick in, but rather as a generator to supply juice to the battery while the electric motor continues to drive the wheels.
  • Parallel Hybrid Mode: During high-performance demanding scenarios or high-speed highway cruising, the petrol engine mechanically links to the front wheels to drive the vehicle directly alongside the electric motors.

Together, the petrol engine and battery can give out a combined driving range of over 1,200 km. Additionally, the Seal U inherits Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities from its pure electric siblings, allowing the battery to power external electrical appliances.

Conclusion

By introducing the Seal U DM-i, BYD is directly targeting Indian buyers who want the smoothness and low running costs of an electric vehicle but are still hesitant to buy them due to range anxiety.

The launch is expected to happen before the end of 2026. If priced aggressively, it has the potential to seriously disrupt the premium SUV segment and force a re-evaluation of what hybrid mobility can achieve in the subcontinent.
