MG Electric Cars Get Expensive by Up to ₹5 Lakh in India Due to Rising Input Costs

JSW MG Motor India has increased the prices of its flagship imported EVs, making the M9 luxury MPV and Cyberster electric roadster more expensive by Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2.50 lakh, respectively.

      MG Electric Cars Get Expensive

JSW MG Motor India has rejigged its premium electric vehicle lineup’s pricing, adjusting to the sustained pressure of rising input costs and global supply chain constraints. Prices for the MG M9 luxury MPV now start from ₹75.90 lakh (ex-showroom), bringing up the price by a massive ₹5 lakh from before. Alongside the people-mover, the flagship Cyberster electric roadster has also witnessed an upward revision, with its sticker price seeing a bump of ₹2.50 lakh.

Sold exclusively through the brand’s newly established premium MG Select dealership network, both vehicles are brought into the country as Completely Built Units (CBUs). Following the latest revision, the updated ex-showroom prices stand at:

      • MG M9 EV: ₹75.90 lakh (previously ₹69.90 lakh)
      • MG Cyberster EV: ₹77.49 lakh (previously ₹74.99 lakh)

This price hike stems from escalating raw material costs, higher freight charges for maritime logistics, and the inherent financial volatility associated with importing fully assembled vehicles. While mainstream localised models in the MG portfolio (such as the Windsor EV and Comet EV) are noted with an up to 2 per cent hike, the premium CBU models have now absorbed a much steeper adjustment.

The Halo Portfolio: What the MG 9 and Cyberster Bring to India

These models are not really volume drivers; they serve as high-end technological demonstrators for the brand.

      The MG M9

The M9 is positioned as a zero-emission alternative to ultra-luxury vans like the Toyota Vellfire, though it arrives at a significantly lower price point even after the hike. The M9 is offered in a single, fully-loaded variant.

      • Range: It is built on a dedicated electric platform featuring a 90 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, offering a claimed range of 548 km.
      • Key Specs: The MG M9 carries the promise of a first-class travel experience on roads, offering features including individual ventilated and massage seats in the second row, a massive panoramic sky-roof, Level-2 ADAS, along with advanced Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) charging capabilities.

      The MG Cyberster

The Cyberster effectively operates in a segment of its own. It’s an all-electric, two-door convertible sports car characterised by its dramatic scissor doors. For enthusiasts, it represents the first true electric super-roadster available in India below the stratospheric pricing of European exotics.

      • Battery and Range: The Cyberster carries a 77 kWh battery pack, offering a claimed range of up to 580 km.
      • Performance: The Cyberster EV is also offered in a single, top-of-the-line AWD variant. It is powered by dual motors, each placed on one axle, essentially creating an AWD setup. Producing a massive 535 bhp and 725 Nm of torque, the Cyberster does 0-100 kmph sprint in just 3.2 seconds.

      Market Impact and Segment Dynamics

Despite the ₹ 5 lakh jump, the MG M9 continues to operate without a direct electric rival in India. Its closest premium MPV competitor remains the internal-combustion Kia Carnival, which is priced much lower at ₹ 59.42 lakh (ex-showroom). However, for buyers specifically seeking a luxury electric people-mover, the M9 still manages to retain a distinct value proposition when compared to traditional ICE alternatives that stretch well past the ₹1 crore mark.

The Cyberster, conversely, remains a purely emotional purchase. At ₹77.49 lakh, the ₹ 2.50 lakh hike is unlikely to deter the niche demographic of enthusiasts looking for an electric drop-top that delivers supercar-rivalling acceleration without the associated European exotic price tag.
