JSW MG Motor India has confirmed that the brand will unwrap a PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle) on July 16. While the company has not officially revealed the model’s identity, we think it is definitely the Wuling Starlight 560, a plug-in hybrid SUV currently sold in international markets. It was also spotted testing on Indian roads quite a few times now.
What Has MG Teased?
While this is not a generic teaser, which is shared on social media handles, it is on the other hand a media teaser, sent to various official media houses across the country. As per our source, the teaser carries a message from the brand worded as:
‘Internet Inside transformed the way India drove. Now, it’s time to power the next evolution. Join us as we redefine the way India thinks about New Energy Vehicles’.
Why Do We Think It Will Be The Wuling Starlight 560 PHEV?
While the July 16 unveil is confirmed, the brand has given no clarity about the model. We think it is the Wuling Starlight 560 PHEV, as it is the most appropriate contender, and was spotted testing multiple times.
This new hybrid model is part of SAIC’s global portfolio and is offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain in global markets. It measures around 4.7 metres in length and has a modern design with sleek LED lighting, flush-fit door handles and a premium-looking cabin. If it is launched in India, it would become one of the largest plug-in hybrid SUVs in its price range.
New MG Plug-In Hybrid SUV Powertrain Details
In the global market, where the Wuling Starlight 560 is sold currently, it is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine making around 78 kW, or 105 hp, paired to an electric motor and a 20.5 kWh battery pack. Depending on the driving conditions, the SUV is expected to deliver a combined driving range of over 1,000 km under Chinese test cycles. But, official India-spec powertrain details will only be revealed around the official launch.
Expected Positioning In Indian Market
If the Wuling Starlight 560 arrives in India under JSW-MG’s banner, it could be positioned above the popular MG Hector and below the premium imported EVs sold through MG Select dealerships. This new PHEV could capture the buyers who are looking for an advanced family car without fully committing to a battery-electric one. When it is launched, it will rival the Mahindra XUV 7XO, the Toyota Innova Hycross, and the Tata Safari, among others.
