If you’re familiar with the Indian electric vehicle market, you’ll know that crossing the four-digit monthly sales mark is a crucial milestone. It separates the niche newcomer automakers who are testing the waters, bringing in imports, from the serious volume players who intent on capturing market share.
The threshold was officially passed by VinFast last month. After cautiously rolling out its retail in the final quarter of 2025, the Vietnamese brand has been gradually increasing its sales numbers, with 1,150 units sold, just in April 2026.
By the Numbers: The Upward Trajectory
After a humble dispatch of units to the brand’s early adopters in September 2025, the brand steadily picked up pace in the new calendar year:
| Month | Units Sold (Vahan Data) | Market Context |
| Sep 2025 | 6 | Initial registration and dealer demo phase |
| Oct 2025 | 136 | Proper first batch of customer deliveries commence |
| Nov 2025 | 309 | Steady ramp-up with increasing dealership footprint and brand awareness |
| Dec 2025 | 387 | Year-end push before 2026 pricing adjustments |
| Jan 2026 | 447 | Increased numbers despite the price hike of up to Rs1.3 lakh |
| Feb 2026 | 420 | A minor market-wide slump |
| Mar 2026 | 734 | Massive 74% month-on-month surge, driven by increased EV adoption |
| Apr 2026 | 1,150 | VinFast MPV 7 launched; the brand officially reaches the 1000-unit milestone. |
The Vinfast Strategy: Warranties, White Spaces, and Aggressive Styling
One of the primary drivers behind VinFast’s rapidly expanding slice of the Indian EV market is a relentless slew of launches. But, unlike brands that simply import their global catalogue and hope for the best, VinFast is curating its lineup for the Indian buyer’s specific psyche.
The styling is a massive factor. Both the VF 6 and VF 7 wear heavily sculpted, sporty exteriors designed by renowned Italian styling houses like Pininfarina and Torino Design. They look far more aggressive and premium for their sticker prices. For the Indian consumer, who heavily weighs road presence, this sharp, futuristic design is winning over a lot of potential SUV buyers who were previously on the fence about shifting to electric.
Then comes the strategic positioning. The recent introduction of the VinFast VF MPV 7 is one such example. For a long time, a massive white space has existed in the sub-Rs25 lakh electric seven-seater utility segment. By launching a premium, three-row electric MPV that significantly undercuts established rivals like the BYD eMax 7, VinFast has found a lucrative, uncontested spot.
However, selling a new, unfamiliar automotive badge to the Indian middle class requires more than just good looks and sharp pricing. To combat the hesitation associated with a new brand, VinFast introduced a highly disruptive ownership package. By coupling their vehicles with an assured 75% buyback programme and a massive 10-year battery warranty, they are trying to neutralise the twin fears of EV ownership: battery degradation and massive depreciation.
Such a strategy for the product is supported by an equally aggressive physical presence. VinFast has gone past the strategy of having a presence in metro areas alone and started setting up dealerships in both Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities. This expansion in retail outlets coincides with the setup of their manufacturing plant in the locality of Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu.
The Current Vinfast Portfolio
Here’s what VinFast’s current showrooms have on offer:
- VF 6: The entry point to the brand’s SUV lineup. It competes in the fiercely contested compact SUV segment, offering a punchy electric motor, a driver-centric cabin, and a footprint perfectly suited for congested urban commutes.
- VF 7: The mid-size, style-forward sibling. It takes the fight to the premium EV crossovers, offering a massive leap in performance-to-price value. Its low, wide stance and aggressive lighting signatures make it a genuine head-turner.
- VF MPV 7: The family haulier trades outright sporting dynamics for sheer cabin volume, delivering a comfortable, three-row electric experience that prioritises range and passenger comfort over a long list of features.
What’s Next for Vinfast: Expected Launches
If VinFast’s global roadmap is any indicator, we are keeping a close eye on the highly anticipated VinFast VF 3. A rugged, ultra-compact, two-door electric box, the VF 3 has the potential to completely disrupt the entry-level mass market currently occupied by the MG Comet and Tata Tiago EV.
Furthermore, as the brand establishes its premium credentials, the introduction of the VF 8, which is a larger, more luxurious D-segment SUV, could challenge the upper segment of the premium electric market.
