Forget The Mahindra XEV 9S! Upcoming Tata Safari EV Will Blow Your Mind

The Tata Safari EV was spotted testing on Indian roads a few days ago, indicating that Tata Motors has begun work on an all-electric version of its flagship three-row SUV. Here’s everything we expect from the upcoming electric SUV.

Quick Reads

  • Tata Safari EV has been spotted testing for the first time
  • Expected to share its platform and powertrain with the Harrier EV
  • Will get both RWD and AWD powertrains
  • Expected launch is likely in 2027
  • Will become Tata’s flagship three-row electric SUV

After a successful launch of the new Tata Sierra EV, Tata Motors has now turned its attention to another flagship – the Tata Safari EV. The electric SUV has been spotted testing on Indian roads for the first time, confirming that development is underway. While Tata has remained tight-lipped about its launch timeline, the Safari EV is expected to arrive sometime in late 2027.

Tata Safari EV Battery, Performance And More

The Safari EV is expected to borrow heavily from the Tata Harrier EV. This also means we can expect two battery pack options:

  • 65 kWh battery
  • 75 kWh battery

Powertrain choices will also likely mirror those of the Harrier EV’s, but with a different tune and better optimisation:

  • Single-motor Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD)
  • Dual-motor Quad Wheel Drive (QWD/AWD)

The dual-motor variant could produce around 285 kW (390 PS) and 504 Nm. Why this figure? Because we think Tata Motors wouldn’t want to lose out on the performance front here. And, with Harrier EV’s powertrain fitted in a bigger body shell, the increased performance output is needed to match the additional weight, and size of the Safari EV.

Tata Safari EV Specifications

SpecificationExpected Details

Battery Pack65 kWh / 75 kWh
PowertrainSingle Motor RWD / Dual Motor AWD
Peak PowerUp to 285 kW (390 PS in AWD)
Peak TorqueUp to 504 Nm
Top SpeedAround 180 kmph

Launch TimelineExpected in 2027

Tata Safari EV Range

If Tata carries over the Harrier EV’s battery packs, the Safari EV could offer a MIDC (Modified Indian Driving Cycle) range of over 620 km, which is more than enough for an SUV of its size.

Real-world driving range could be somewhere between 480 km and 550 km, depending on the battery pack, road, and driving pattern. Its larger dimensions may have a slight impact on efficiency, but it should still comfortably exceed the 500 km mark.

Here are the Tata Safari EV range figures at a glance:

Battery PackClaimed Range (Expected)Real-World Range (Estimated)
65 kWhAround 500 km400-430 km
75 kWhMore than 620 km480-550 km

Tata Safari EV Features

Tata Safari EV

The cabin is likely to be nearly identical to the Harrier. EV, but a little more spacious. This means that we can expect:

  • Dual infotainment screens
  • 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster
  • Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • A panoramic sunroof
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Powered tailgate
  • JBL premium sound system
  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability
  • Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) charging

The Safari EV will continue to offer three-row seating, making it one of the few electric SUVs in India which comfortably accommodates seven occupants. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the feature set the Tata Safari EV might get:

Tata Safari EV Safety Features

Tata Safari EV Safety Features

All Tata electric vehicles are equipped with the utmost safety features which make them the safest in their respective segment, and that is expected to be the case with the Tata Safari EV as well. The new Tata electric SUV will likely get:

  • Level 2 ADAS
  • Six airbags as standard
  • A 540-degree camera
  • Blind Spot Monitor
  • Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Electronic parking brake with Auto Hold function
  • Multiple terrain modes (just like Harrier EV and Sierra EV)
  • Off-road assist features on AWD variants for more capability

Tata Safari EV Price

We think the Safari EV will be one of the most premium Tata electric cars in India and will slot above the Harrier EV in the brand’s electric lineup. So, the expected price could be somewhere between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 35 lakh (ex-showroom).

Tata Safari EV Expected Variant-wise Pricing

VariantExpected Price (Ex-showroom)
BaseRs 25 lakh
MidRs 28 lakh
Top RWDRs 32 lakh
Top AWDRs 35 lakh

With this price, the Safari EV will rival the top-spec variants of the Mahindra XEV 9S, BYD Sealion 7, and even the Mahindra XEV 9e. Because it is a premium electric SUV, it could rival some big players in the PHEV and ICE segments, like the Toyota Innova Hycross, Maruti Suzuki Invicto, Mahindra Scorpio N, MG Hector, and also the Mahindra XUV 7XO. Here’s a detailed price comparison of all the above cars:

Tata Safari EV Price Comparison With Rival Cars

Electric CarEx-Showroom Price Range
Tata Safari EVRs 25 lakh to Rs 35 lakh (Expected)
Tata Harrier EVRs 21.69 lakh – Rs 30.23 lakh
Tata Sierra EVRs 18.79 lakh – Rs 25.99 lakh
Mahindra XEV 9SRs 19.95 lakh – Rs 30.20 lakh
Mahindra XEV 9eRs 21.90 lakh – Rs 31.25 lakh
Mahindra Scorpio-NRs 13.49 lakh – Rs 24.95 lakh
Mahindra XUV 7XORs 13.66 lakh – Rs 24.92 lakh
Toyota Innova Hycross HybridRs 26.76 lakh – Rs 31.84 lakh
Maruti Suzuki Invicto HybridRs 24.97 lakh – Rs 28.61 lakh

Why We Think The Tata Safari EV Makes A Lot Of Sense

Tata Motors has a plethora of SUVs in multiple segments, but even then the Safari EV will help the brand fill out an important gap in the market – the one where the buyer needs exciting performance, but doesn’t want to compromise on the extra space, and seating capacity.

And, Safari sharing components with the Harrier EV and Sierra EV would mean quite a lot of reduced development costs, all while offering a road-tested, customer-proven battery pack and powertrain. Here’s how the Tata Safari EV will differ from the Tata Harrier EV:

Tata Safari EV vs Tata Harrier EV Comparison

ParameterTata Safari EV (Expected)Tata Harrier EV
Seating Capacity6 And 7 Seater Layout5 Seater Layout
Battery65 kWh / 75 kWh65 kWh / 75 kWh

Tata Safari EV Launch Date

While Tata is yet to confirm the launch date, the progress on the test mules definitely indicates that Tata is quite serious about the vehicle. We think the launch could happen somewhere around 2028, and we do expect a lot more sightings of the Safari EV in the upcoming months, and please stay tuned to SearchEV for more such details. We’ll update you soon.
