Keeway has entered India’s premium electric scooter space with the Hypevolt-R, with an introductory price of Rs 1.99 lakh (ex-showroom). It is the brand’s first electric maxi-scooter in India and gets a lot of premium features. Bookings are now open for a token amount of Rs 5,000, with deliveries expected to begin soon.
The Keeway Hypevolt-R gets a very futuristic design, with a stacked headlight setup that looks very aggressive. The on either side of the headlight, the scooter gets an LED DRL which highlights the front apron.
On the side, the scooter gets massive coloured side panels with ‘Hypevolt-R’ stickering, and it flows till the tail section, which is sleek yet equally sporty. Due to its fundamental design, the scooter doesn’t get a floorboard but a raised step-through, which looks a lot cooler than the other electric scooters on the market right now. It is offered in two colour schemes: Crystal White, and Platinum Grey.
Keeway Hypevolt-R Battery, Range, And Performance
Powering the Hypevolt-R is a 5 kWh NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) battery pack. The advantage of the NMC battery over the regular lithium-ion ones found in other electric scooters is that the NMC has a much higher energy density, an exceptionally high power output, and much better cold-weather performance. It is paired to a mid-mounted PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor), which puts out 12 kW of peak power (6.5 kW continuous). The claimed range is around 180 km (claimed), and the claimed charging time for 0-80% SoC (State Of Charge) is 3 hours.
Keeway claims the scooter can accelerate from 0 to 50 kmph in just under four seconds, and has a claimed top speed of 115 kmph.
Keeway Hypevolt-R Suspension, Brakes, And More
The Hypevolt-R rolls on 14-inch alloy wheels, which are shod in semi-slick tyres. It is suspended on a front telescopic fork and 5-step adjustable monoshock absorbers. The scooter also has disc brakes with a dual-channel ABS, which puts it among the very few electric scooters in India with ABS. The Hypevolt-R’s seat height is 770, the ground clearance is 130mm, and it weighs 140 kg. It also has a 27-litre boot, which makes it quite practical.
Keeway Hypevolt-R Features
On the features part, the Hypevolt-R is among the most equipped electric scooters to be launched in India yet. It comes with a 5-inch TFT display with smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth, LED lighting, reverse modes, hill-hold control, an intelligent cruise control system, and even multiple riding modes. The scooter is also fitted with a rear camera and an ADAS system. It also has a blind-spot detection system, which alerts you of any incoming traffic from behind.
What We Think
We think that Keeway is quite serious about the Indian market. Though the ICE products have been doing just well in the market, this electric scooter might just be the thing the brand needed to crack open the sales. With the Rs 1.99 lakh price, it will compete fiercely with performance scooters like the Ather 450 Apex, Simple Ultra, and the upcoming Ultraviolette Tesseract.
