Tesla Model Y Premium RWD Launched At Rs 50.89 Lakh

Tesla has quietly revised the pricing of the 2026 Model Y Premium RWD variant in India. It is now Rs 50,000 more expensive than before

2026 Tesla Model Y Premium RWD Price

      Quick Reads

      • The new Model Y Premium RWD is priced at Rs 50.89 lakh (ex-showroom)
      • It is now cheaper by Rs 9 lakh compared to the original entry-level model launched last year
      • The Indian Tesla lineup now only consists of the 5-seater Premium RWD, and the larger, 6-seater Model Y L (priced at Rs 61.99 lakh)
      • Customer deliveries for the new Premium RWD variant are officially slated to commence in July 2026

Following the recent introduction of the stretched, six-seater Model Y L, Tesla has completely recalibrated its Indian portfolio by updating the Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), and bringing it at a highly disruptive price of Rs 50.89 lakh. This strategic price correction eliminates the awkward overlap of previous variants and establishes a streamlined, two-tier lineup for the American automaker in the subcontinent.

      Why the Sudden Price Drop?

To understand this pricing strategy, one must look at Tesla’s recent product manoeuvres in India. Just a few weeks prior, the brand introduced the Model Y L, which is a long-wheelbase, six-seater variant priced at Rs 61.99 lakh. Given that the original standard-wheelbase Model Y was sitting at Rs 59.89 lakh, the mere Rs 2.1 lakh difference made the older variants look exceptionally overpriced and practically obsolete in terms of value.

Realising this cannibalisation, Tesla has wiped the slate clean. By discontinuing the older standard and Long-Range AWD versions, the automaker has introduced this updated Premium RWD variant.

This creates a nearly Rs 9 lakh price drop from the previous RWD model and also develops a healthy price gap against the flagship Model Y L, addressing criticisms regarding value for money.

New Tesla Model Y Premium: Powertrain and Range

The Tesla Model Y Premium RWD variant comes powered by a 64 kWh battery pack (speculated based on global specs), and it powers a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle. This setup produces nearly 299 horsepower.

The crossover accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in a brisk 5.9 seconds, eventually topping out at 201 kmph. Crucially for Indian buyers who prioritise long-distance capability, the Premium RWD delivers a claimed WLTP driving range of up to 500 km on a single charge and is fully compatible with Tesla’s rapidly expanding Supercharger network across major Indian hubs.

      Interior Design and Features

Inside the cabin, the Premium RWD variant sticks to the brand’s minimalism ethos. The crossover comfortably accommodates five passengers and is available with either an All-Black or a new Zen Grey interior design theme.

The dashboard is completely devoid of traditional buttons, dominated entirely by a central 16-inch touchscreen interface that controls everything from media and navigation to climate control and driving dynamics. Rear passengers also get an 8.0-inch touchscreen.

Standard equipment includes a fixed panoramic glass roof, dual wireless charging pads, multi-colour ambient lighting, and an advanced 9-speaker audio system.

Furthermore, practicality remains a strong suit; with the rear seats folded down, the Model Y provides a cavernous total storage capacity of 2,138 litres, supplemented by a generous front trunk (frunk).

      Conclusion

With the introduction of the Model Y Premium RWD at Rs 50.89 lakh, Tesla has dramatically shifted the goalposts in the Indian premium electric vehicle segment. This aggressive localisation of pricing not only justifies the existence of the more expensive Model Y L but also places the entry-level Tesla in direct, fierce competition with established luxury rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the BYD Seal, the BMW iX1, and the Volvo XC40 Recharge.
