Hyundai Motor India confirmed that its upcoming sub-4-metre electric SUV will be manufactured at the brand’s Tamil Nadu facility. The new electric SUV is expected to become Hyundai’s first truly mass-market electric car for India.
The new EV has been spotted on Indian roads and was first outlined during Hyundai’s 2025 Investor Day presentation, where the brand announced plans for a heavily localised, India-focused electric vehicle.
Chennai Plant To Become Hyundai’s EV Base
Hyundai has highlighted Tamil Nadu multiple times as its flagship EV manufacturing base for India. The upcoming sub-4-metre SUV will be one of the first electric mass-market cars to be produced here. The brand has also invested in local battery assembly and EV component manufacturing at this facility to further reduce manufacturing costs and time.
The localisation of the new EV could eventually reach as high as 90% over the next five to six years, which would translate to a better supply chain efficiency and more affordable future electric cars.
Two Battery Packs Expected
While Hyundai has not yet revealed any official information, we think that the compact EV could be offered with two battery pack options: 42 kWh and 49 kWh – the same as the international spec Hyundai Inster EV. It will also share a bunch of its components with the upcoming Kia Syros EV, which is expected to be launched in India soon.
ADAS To Be Offered
One of the most interesting details revealed so far is that the new Hyundai electric SUV will be equipped with Level 2 ADAS technology. And, with this type of equipment levels, this new compact EV could become one of the few sub-4-metre electric SUVs in India to get ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). While the base variants are speculated to offer just enough features, higher variants will be packed with features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist and autonomous emergency braking.
Takeaway
This new Hyundai EV is expected to sit just below the Hyundai Creta Electric and will be Hyundai’s most affordable offering. It will directly rival models such as the Tata Punch EV, Tata Tiago EV, and upcoming Maruti Suzuki compact electric SUVs. While the price for this SUV will be lower than Creta Electric’s, higher variants could be priced above Rs 15 lakh due to the inclusion of ADAS and larger battery options.
