JSW MG announces a new ADAPT battery electric and hybrid platform-underpinning model, built to contend against the Mahindra XEV 9S, with sales commencing next month. The new model will feature a design similar to the Wuling Eksion, now in production and sales in the Indonesian market. The Wuling Eksion is the sister company of MG Motor, with shared vehicular platforms.
As per reports, the JSW MG ADAPT-based SUV will come with a strikingly apt price tag lower than the XEV 9S 70 kWh capacity SUV, which rolls with a price of Rs 25.8 Lakh (ex-showroom).
New JSW MG SUV | Battery And Range Performance:
The upcoming JSW MG electric SUV will come equipped with a 69 kWh capacity battery pack rating with a range output of around 600 km on a fully charged battery. To point out, the Mahindra XEV 9S features 59 kWh, 70 kWh and 79 kWh battery capacity variants; they deliver 521 km, 600 km and 679 km of driving range, respectively. MG’s target is to drive customers towards its 69 kWh model, rivalling against the stronghold market share led by the Mahindra XEV 9S 70 kWh variant.
In terms of power, the JSW MG model is expected to deliver similar performance to that of the Wuling Eksion; around 201 hp of power and 310 Nm of torque, featuring a front-wheel drive setup. As for the Mahindra XEV 9S, it utilises a rear-wheel drive motor and drivetrain.
New JSW MG EV SUV | Interior | Exterior:
The new JSW MG electric SUV is anticipated to feature a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with all the bells and whistles. A digital instrument cluster with multiple pieces of information will be offered. Apart from these, for comfort and convenience, the vehicle can feature a panoramic sunroof – also a lifestyle addition. Also, a powered tailgate will be offered with the new model.
Coming to the exterior design front, the JSW MG EV for India will come with a modern design language hosting a taller and upright silhouette matching the dimensions of the XEV 9S in India. The new model is expected to measure 4.7 m in length, 1.85 m in width and 1.7 m in height. For reference, the Mahindra XEV 9S in India measures 4.7 m long, 1.9 m wide and 1.7m tall.
A Plug-In Hybrid Model To Rival the Mahindra XUV 7XO:
The upcoming plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) model will feature a similar design but with unique styling elements to differentiate the PHEV from the fully electric iteration. The PHEV model will be the next offering based on the ADAPT modular platform, producing 105 hp and 130 Nm, featuring a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine and an electric motor propelled by a 20.5 kWh LFP battery. The motor alone generates 195 hp and 230 Nm, significant for a PHEV SUV.
Conclusion | PHEV And EV | The Core Element?
Anurag Mehrotra, the managing director of JSW MG Motor India, has stated in reports that PHEVs and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are the core focus considering consumer demand. Amongst these solutions, BEV will be the primary bread and butter due to higher EV adoption in India. Mehrotra also pointed out the importance of a multi-powertrain approach for the Indian market.
All in all, JSW MG is focused on the modular multi-powertrain ADAPT platform for India. The strategy is to cater to consumer requirements, featuring solid solutions that are designed for range efficiency and high-power and torque performance – factors that are a priority for consumers.
