EV Charging Setup At Home — Everything You Need To Know (2026)

Bought an electric vehicle or planning to get one? The first question that comes to mind after the purchase is, where am I going to charge this every day?

The answer is simple at home.

More than 80% of EV owners in India charge at home. Not at public stations, not at malls—at home, overnight, while they sleep. By morning, the battery is full and ready to go.

Setting up home EV charging is not complicated. Knowing the right charger, the cost, and how installation works will save you time and money. Here is everything in simple language.

Can I Charge My EV At Home In India?

Can I Charge My EV At Home In India

Yes. Any electric vehicle sold in India — scooter, bike, or car — can be charged at home. Every EV comes with a portable charger in the box that plugs into a standard wall socket. For faster daily charging, a dedicated wall box near your parking spot is a better option.

You do not need anything special to get started. A normal household connection is enough.

Why Home Charging Is Better Than Public Charging

Think of it like charging your phone. Plug it in before bed and pick it up fully charged in the morning. An EV works the same way.

The biggest reason to charge at home is cost. Home electricity in India costs Rs 5 to Rs 10 per unit. Public DC fast chargers cost Rs 15 to Rs 25 per unit—nearly three times more expensive. Over a month, the difference is significant.

Add the convenience of never visiting a petrol station again, and home charging becomes the smartest part of EV ownership.

Types Of EV Chargers For Home Use In India

There are two main options. Choosing the right one depends on your vehicle and daily driving distance.

Can I Charge My EV With A Normal Plug?

Yes. The portable charger that comes with your EV plugs into a standard 15A socket. No installation needed. Just plug in and charge.

The downside is speed. For electric scooters, it works fine—4 to 6 hours for a full charge. For electric cars with larger batteries, it can take 12 to 20 hours. If you drive more than 40 km daily, this feels too slow.

Best for: Electric scooter and car owners with short commutes.

What Is A 7.4 kW AC Wall Box Charger?

This is the right setup for most electric car owners. A wall box is mounted near your parking spot on a dedicated circuit.

At 7.4 kW it adds 35 to 40 km of range per hour. For cars like the Tata Nexon EV and Punch EV, charging from 20% to 80% takes 5 to 6 hours. Plug it in after dinner, and it will be fully charged by morning.

Best for: Electric car owners who want reliable overnight charging.

EV Home Charging Setup Cost In India 2026

      Setup Type Cost
      15A socket upgrade Rs 2,000 – Rs 5,000
      7.4 kW wall box Rs 35,000 – Rs 75,000
      11 kW three-phase wall box Rs 60,000 – Rs 1,20,000

Is the Home Charger Free With Car Purchase?

Many brands like Tata, MG, Mahindra, and Hyundai include a free home charger and installation with the vehicle. Always ask your dealer before paying separately. It can save Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 upfront.

How To Install EV Charger At Home — Step By Step

Step 1 — Load check Your electrician checks if your home has enough sanctioned load. Most homes with 5 kW or higher are fine. If not, apply for a load upgrade from your local electricity board.

Step 2 — Location Pick a spot close to your parking area, sheltered from rain. A shorter cable run means a lower wiring cost.

Step 3 — Dedicated wiring and MCB A separate wire runs from the main board with its own MCB switch. Never share this circuit with heavy appliances like ACs or geysers.

Step 4 — Earthing Proper earthing protects you and the vehicle. A certified electrician sets this up before finishing.

Step 5 — Testing: The charger is tested fully. Smart app setup is done if applicable. The whole job is done in one day.

Does EV Charging Increase Electricity Bills?

Yes, but much less than most people expect.

Driving 40 km daily uses roughly 6 to 7 units of electricity. At Rs 7 per unit, that is Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,500 per month.

      EV vs. Petrol—Monthly Cost Comparison

      Monthly Cost
      EV home charging (40 km/day) Rs 1,300 – Rs 1,500
      Petrol car (40 km/day) Rs 7,500 – Rs 8,000
Saving every month Rs 6,000 – Rs 6,500

The savings start from day one.

Can I Install an EV Charger in an Apartment?

Yes. Rules have changed in most states now.

How To Get NOC From Housing Society

In Maharashtra, societies must issue an NOC within 7 days of your application by law. Many other states have similar rules. If your society hesitates, point them to your state’s EV policy. A properly installed charger is safe and does not inconvenience anyone else in the building.

Government Subsidy For Home EV Charger 2026

      • Delhi — Up to Rs 6,000 subsidy. Special EV tariff of Rs 4.50 per unit on a dedicated meter.
      • Maharashtra — Waiver on demand charges for home EV setups.
      • Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab — 20 to 25% subsidy on charger cost.

Check with your local electricity board for the latest schemes before installing.

      Is Home EV Charging Safe?

      Yes, when installed correctly.

Do I Need Earthing for an EV Charger?

Yes. Earthing is essential. Any certified electrician will set it up as part of the installation.

Can I Use An Extension Cord For EV Charging?

No. Never. It is a fire hazard. Always use a dedicated socket or wall box connected directly to your main board.

Does Overnight Charging Damage EV Batteries?

No. Slow overnight AC charging is actually the gentlest way to charge. It produces less heat and less battery stress. The battery management system (BMS) in every modern EV automatically stops charging once it is full. No risk of overcharging.

Best Time To Charge EV At Home

Charge between 11 PM and 6 AM. Electricity demand is low, and many states offer cheaper off-peak tariffs during these hours. Use your EV app to schedule charging automatically.

Should I Charge to 100% Every Day?

For daily use, keep the charge between 20% and 80%. This habit extends battery life over the years. Only go to 100% before a long trip.

Can I Charge An EV With Solar Panels At Home?

      Solar Panels At Home

Yes. A 3 kW rooftop solar system can cover most of your daily EV charging at almost zero cost. If you are planning solar anyway, combine it with your home charger setup. The savings stack up fast—no fuel cost and no electricity bill for charging.

      Final Word

Home EV charging sounds technical before you set it up and completely normal after. Once you wake up to a full battery every morning without any effort, you will not think about it twice.

The setup is a one-time cost. The savings on fuel and the daily convenience make it worth every rupee.

If you are buying an EV, ask about the free home charger before you sign. If you already own one, get the wall box installed now. It genuinely changes how you experience owning an electric vehicle.
