      Expert Verdict

The Sealion 7 is a “best of both worlds” experience: the tech and speed of a sports car with the ground clearance and space of an SUV. It brings BYD’s “Ocean” design language to a larger SUV-coupe format, with the Blade Battery tech.

      BYD Sealion 7 Design

      ★ 8.5/10

      Exterior

The Sealion 7 is a visual treat, featuring the signature “Ocean X” face. The double U-shaped LED headlamps and the continuous dot-matrix taillight bar give it a sophisticated, high-end look. At 4,830 mm long, it is significantly larger than the BYD Atto 3, and its 190 mm ground clearance ensures it handles Indian roads with ease. The flush door handles and 20-inch aero-wheels contribute to a slippery 0.23 Cd drag coefficient.

      Interior

Step inside, and you’re greeted by a quilted Nappa leather interior that screams premium. The dashboard is clean, using soft-touch materials extensively. A massive 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen dominates the center, flanked by a 10.25-inch digital cluster. The 128-color ambient lighting and the “Double Layer” center console give it a lounge-like feel that rivals German luxury brands.

      Build Quality

Thanks to Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology, the battery is integrated into the car’s frame, resulting in exceptional torsional rigidity (40,500 Nm/degree). This makes the car feel incredibly “tight” and silent. There are no squeaks or rattles, and the door thud is remarkably solid.

The Sealion 7 is arguably the best-looking SUV-coupe in its price bracket. The interior isn’t just flashy; it’s ergonomically sound. While the ‘Ocean’ design might be too fluid for some, the level of perceived quality is higher than that of the Ioniq 5.

      BYD Sealion 7 Features

      ★ 8.5/10

BYD doesn’t hold back on the gadgetry:

      • Infotainment: The rotating screen is the fastest in the segment, running on a custom BYD DiLink 5.0 system with 5G connectivity.
      • Audio: A 12-speaker Dynaudio system provides a theatre-like experience with great depth and clarity.
      • Comfort: You get ventilated and heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a massive panoramic glass roof with an electric sunshade, a major plus for the Indian sun.
      • V2L (Vehicle to Load): It can power external appliances (like a coffee machine or laptop) using the car’s battery.

The feature list is exhaustive. However, like the Seal, almost all controls are on the screen. Adjusting the AC vents via a menu is cool once, but it can be annoying during a high-speed highway run. It will take you some time to get accustomed to this setup.

BYD Sealion 7 Performance & Range

      ★ 8.5/10

The Sealion 7 comes with two distinct options in India:

      • Premium (RWD): Features a single motor producing 313 PS and 380 Nm. It’s more than enough for 99% of drivers, hitting 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds.
      • Performance (AWD): A dual-motor beast producing 530 PS and 690 Nm. It rockets from 0-100 km/h in a staggering 4.5 seconds.

BYD claims an NEDC range of up to 567 kms. In real-world conditions, when we drove the 82.56kWh variant, we got a range of close to 500 kms, which is quite impressive. When we drove it on highways and expressways, the range dropped to around 400-410 km. This makes it a great electric car for long hauls.

The AWD Performance variant is scarily fast. It delivers that ‘punch-in-the-gut’ acceleration usually reserved for supercars. What’s more impressive is the efficiency; even with 530 horses, it stays incredibly frugal in city traffic.

BYD Sealion 7 Ride & Handling

      ★ 8/10

The Sealion 7 features FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) as standard.

      • Ride: It leans toward the firm side to handle the weight of the massive battery. Over sharp bumps, you might hear a “thud,” but it never feels crashy. It’s a very settled and mature ride on highways.
      • Handling: Despite being a 2.2-ton SUV, it stays flat in corners. The steering is light and direct, though it lacks the communicative “feel” of a BMW iX1.

This is more of a high-speed cruiser than a corner-carver. It’s stable at triple-digit speeds and masks its weight brilliantly during emergency lane changes. It’s the perfect long-distance EV for Indian families.

      BYD Sealion 7 Safety

      ★ 10/10

Safety is a non-negotiable for BYD.

      • Ratings: It carries a full 5-star Euro NCAP and 5-star ANCAP rating.
      • Hardware: It comes with 11 Airbags, including a center airbag between the driver and passenger to prevent head clashes during side impacts. It also comes with ESC, EBD, hill-hold assist, and much more as standard.
      • ADAS: The Level 2 suite is comprehensive, featuring Predictive Collision Warning, Lane Departure Assist, and an excellent 360-degree camera with a “transparent chassis” view.

The 11-airbag count is industry-leading at this price. The ADAS is surprisingly well-calibrated for India, though the Emergency Braking can be a bit over-eager in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

BYD Sealion 7 Space & Comfort

      ★ 8.5/10
      • Cabin Space: The 2,930 mm wheelbase (longer than most luxury SUVs) translates to massive legroom. The rear seat is wide enough for three adults without any shoulder-rubbing.
      • Posture: The seats are plush and “couch-like.” While the rear floor is flat, it is slightly high, which may cause a minor “knees-up” posture for very tall passengers.
      • Storage: The BYD Sealion 7 gets a healthy 500 litres of boot space, with an adjustable floor. The boot is designed to hold approximately 1 large, 1 medium, and 4 small suitcases, making it well-suited for family trips. At the front, you get a 58-litre frunk, where you can store small bags or charging cables.

The Sealion 7 feels cavernous inside. The high-ish floor is the only minor gripe, but the reclining rear seats and ample kneeroom more than make up for it. It’s a genuine 5-seater.

BYD Sealion 7 Charging & Warranty

      ★ 10/10
      • Charging: The Sealion 7 supports 150 kW DC fast charging, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in 45 minutes. A 7 kW standard home charger takes about 11 hours for a full charge.
      • Warranty: BYD offers an 8-year/1,60,000 km battery warranty and a 6-year/1,50,000 km vehicle warranty. The Blade Battery is famous for being one of the only batteries to pass the “nail penetration test” without catching fire.

The Blade Battery is the gold standard for safety. Knowing your battery is physically incapable of a thermal runaway (fire) is the ultimate peace of mind for any EV owner.

BYD Sealion 7 Service & Network

      ★ 6.5/10

BYD is expanding rapidly in India with over 35 showrooms across 25 cities. While the network isn’t as vast as the mass competitors, they offer a 24/7 Roadside Assistance program and a mobile service app for booking.

The network is the only weak link. If you live in a major city, you’re fine, but tier-2 and tier-3 support are still catching up. However, their reliability track record globally is excellent.
