Mercedes-Benz India has officially unveiled the CLA Electric in Bengaluru, bringing one of the longest claimed ranges yet to India’s premium EV space. With a WLTP-rated range of up to 792 km, the electric sedan is clearly aimed at buyers who want luxury without constantly worrying about charging stops.
Bookings for the CLA Electric will open on March 10, with the official launch scheduled for April. Built on Mercedes’ new MMA electric platform, the CLA Electric marks a shift toward purpose-built EV architectures for the brand in India. More than anything, it shows Mercedes wants its electric sedans to work just as well on long drives as they do in city traffic.
Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric Range and Battery
The CLA Electric 250+ uses an 85.5 kWh battery along with an 800-volt setup that helps it charge faster and run more efficiently. Power output stands at 268 bhp, and a two-speed transmission helps balance acceleration and efficiency. Mercedes claims a 0–100 kmph time of 6.7 seconds.
Rather than relying only on a large battery, Mercedes has focused on reducing energy consumption. The company is targeting efficiency figures as low as 12 kWh per 100 km, an approach inspired by its Vision EQXX programme. In real-world terms, this could mean fewer charging stops on highway drives compared to most luxury EVs currently on sale in India.
The CLA Electric supports DC fast charging at up to 240 kW through its 800-volt system. Mercedes claims this is enough to add roughly 400 km of range in about 20 minutes. The higher-voltage system also helps reduce heat buildup while charging, making quick top-ups more efficient, a big plus for buyers who plan to take their EV on longer highway drives.
Platform Strategy and Market Position
The CLA Electric is the first Mercedes here to use the new MMA platform, and it’s likely to take the place of models like the A-Class and the EQA/EQB over time. It also shows where the brand is headed, with future cars being built on dedicated electric platforms rather than adapted from petrol models.
The CLA keeps its sleek, coupe-style shape, with a few aero tweaks and light-up details that mark it out as an electric model. Step inside, and it’s clearly tech-led, with large screens taking centre stage and most functions handled through the digital interface.
