The performance sedan segment in India is getting a jolt of electrification. Mercedes-Benz has launched the AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ at a starting price of Rs 1.45 crore, marking a significant shift for the popular nameplate. Moving away from the mild-hybrid setup of the previous generation, this new iteration embraces a full plug-in hybrid architecture. The result is a vehicle that balances quiet, zero-emission city driving with the raw, aggressive power expected from the engineers in Affalterbach.
Imported as a Completely Built-up Unit (CBU), the sedan is available in either the Performance Edition or the Racing Edition.
A New Plug-In Hybrid Heart
Under the hood, the E53 retains a 3.0-litre, straight-six, turbo-petrol engine, but it is now paired with an electric motor integrated directly into the 9-speed automatic transmission. In its standard configuration, this setup channels 585 hp and 750 Nm of torque to all four wheels via the fully variable 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system.
Buyers opting for the Racing Edition will get the AMG Dynamic Plus package as standard, which unlocks a Race Start mode. This momentarily bumps the power output to 612 hp, cutting the 0-100 kph acceleration time down to a blistering 3.8 seconds. The top speed is electronically capped at 280 kmph (For performance edition, the top speed is 250 kmph).
Battery, Range, and Charging
Performance aside, the plug-in hybrid system adds a layer of everyday practicality. The sedan is equipped with a 400V lithium-ion battery with a 21.2 kWh usable capacity, allowing it to cover over 100 kilometres strictly on electric power.
Charging the battery is handled by a standard 11 kW AC charger. For charging, the E 53 supports an 11 kW AC unit, which takes approximately 2.25 hours for a full 0-100 percent charge. For quicker top-ups, it is also compatible with a 60 kW DC fast charger, which can replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 20 minutes.
Aggressive Styling and Upgraded Chassis
Visually, the E 53 distances itself from the standard E-Class. The front fascia commands attention with an illuminated AMG-specific grille and larger air intakes, while the front fenders have been flared out by 11mm on each side to accommodate wider tracks. At the rear, it gets a darkened diffuser alongside quad circular exhaust tips.
Besides the cosmetic additions, Mercedes has also reinforced the chassis and the braking system to account for the greater mechanical prowess.
Mercedes-AMG E 53 Features
Standard features include powered AMG sports seats, an AMG performance steering wheel, and distinctive aesthetics. Drivers interact with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.4-inch central touchscreen. Depending on the configuration, a Burmester sound system, a panoramic sunroof, and a 360-degree camera setup round out the tech suite.
