JSW MG Motor has begun road testing its first all-new locally manufactured SUV since the launch of the MG Windsor in September 2024. Spotted for the first time on Indian roads, the upcoming model is currently known by its internal codename “MG 520” and is expected to sit above the MG Hector in the brand’s lineup.
Globally, the SUV is sold as the Wuling Starlight 560, and the India-bound version is being referred to as the MG Starlight 560 for now, though the final name is yet to be confirmed. This model is also expected to be one of four new SUVs MG plans to introduce in India this year.
Plug-In Hybrid Variant Confirmed
The test vehicle clearly points to the plug-in hybrid version. A functional grille with honeycomb inserts on the upper fascia gives it away, a design detail typically seen on MG’s partially electrified models. The rectangular headlamp layout also matches the international Starlight 560. Internationally, the SUV is offered in both five- and seven-seat configurations, and MG is likely to bring both options to India, depending on demand. Feature highlights are expected to include full-LED lighting, 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, and Level 2 ADAS.
Hybrid and Electric Versions Planned
MG plans to offer the Starlight 560 in both plug-in hybrid and fully electric forms, with the India launch expected to focus first on the hybrid model.
The plug-in hybrid version uses an electric motor paired with a 20.5 kWh LFP battery, offering up to 125 km of electric-only driving under CLTC testing. This setup should be enough to cover most daily commutes on battery power, while the hybrid system steps in when longer distances are involved. MG claims a top speed of 170 km/h for this version.
Alongside this, MG is also developing a fully electric Starlight 560. Internationally, the EV comes with a front-mounted motor and a 56.7 kWh LFP battery that delivers a claimed range of around 500 km (CLTC). For India, the company is expected to fine-tune the motor and may even offer a larger battery pack. When it arrives, the electric version could go up against models like the Tata Harrier. ev.
India Launch Timeline
JSW MG Motor is likely to introduce the Starlight 560 in the fourth quarter of this year. With both plug-in hybrid and fully electric versions in the pipeline, this SUV is expected to become an important part of MG’s India plans. Instead of going all-in on pure EVs, the brand seems to be offering two routes: hybrids for those easing into electrification and full EVs for customers ready to make the complete switch. If pricing and features land right, the Starlight 560 could become MG’s most important launch of 2026.
