Tata Motors continued its long run as the leader of India’s electric car market during December 2025. According to the latest VAHAN registration data, the company sold 5,231 electric vehicles, keeping a firm grip on the top spot as the year came to a close.
While Tata stayed at the front, the biggest news of the month was the rise of VinFast. The Vietnamese brand managed to climb into fourth place, passing established names like Hyundai and Kia. This shift shows how quickly new EV brands can grow when offering localized models like the VF6 and VF7 at competitive prices.
Top Five Brands: December 2025
The leaderboard for December shows a mix of local giants and fast-growing international players. After Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor India took second place, fueled by strong demand for the Windsor EV and ZS EV.
| Brand | Dec EV Sales (Units) | 2025 Overall Market Rank |
| Tata Motors | 5,231 | 1st |
| JSW MG Motor | 3,195 | 2nd |
| Mahindra | 2,600 | 3rd |
| VinFast | 331 | 4th |
| Kia India | 287 | 5th |
VinFast’s Rapid Rise
VinFast’s jump to fourth place is a major milestone for the brand, which only began deliveries in India recently. By selling 331 units in December, they moved ahead of Kia’s 287 units and Hyundai’s 248 units. The company’s strategy of building its VF6 and VF7 models at its new factory in Tamil Nadu has been instrumental in keeping costs low.
Yearly Growth Success
The year 2025 would later prove to be a watershed year for the electric vehicle (EV) market:
- Tata Motors brought the curtain down on the year with well over 68,000 units sold by year-end.
- MG Motor would emerge as the biggest growth story, almost doubling its market share to 25%.
- Mahindra saw the most substantial volume gain, rising from roughly 7,000 units in 2024 to over 33,000 in 2025, thanks to its new “Born Electric” (BE) series.
Premium Market Shift
In the luxury segment, global brands are facing increased competition. In December, Tesla sold 62 vehicles as it began a slow rollout in major metros. While Mercedes-Benz registrations saw a slight dip, BMW increased its monthly sales to 300 units, proving the growing appetite for premium electric mobility.
2026 Market Outlook
The performance in 2025 sets the ground for a tighter competition in 2026. Expect a massive market shake-up with the scheduled launch of Maruti Suzuki’s e-Vitara in January 2026. Furthermore, VinFast is set to launch its mass-market-friendly VF3 and a new electric MPV (Limo Green).
