Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta drafted a new Electric Vehicle policy that is currently being finalised for a launch by early 2026. It plans to fight the city’s heavy air pollution. This plan covers the national capital and aims to achieve a 25% electric sales target to combat severe air pollution. By offering new rewards, the capital aims to persuade more people to opt for battery-powered transport over petrol engines across the region.
New Launch Date
The updated rules will start during the next financial year. Officials point toward April 2026 as the key date for the rollout. This new phase comes after earlier incentives ended, creating a need for a more permanent clean-energy roadmap for the city.
Better Cash Rewards
A primary goal is to give customers direct financial help through subsidies. The policy will continue to offer zero road tax to keep the final price of a battery-powered car much lower. The government also aims to expedite the registration process at showrooms, enabling owners to drive their zero-emission vehicles immediately.
The plan introduces a way to get rid of ageing, smoky vehicles through a “scrappage bonus”. Interestingly, the policy now supports retrofitting, which lets people convert their current cars into electric versions using approved kits. This helps clear high-polluting engines while making the electric transition affordable for the public.
Local Power Points & Battery Recycling
Charging will become a lot more convenient under the new plan. The city is moving away from only having large stations and will now focus on neighbourhood chargers. This means you can find a place to plug in your electric car in housing colonies or local markets, making daily battery fill-ups much simpler.
A new part of the 2026 policy is a focus on battery recycling. The government plans to build a system to handle old electric power cells safely to reduce waste. Additionally, they will provide skill training for local workers to learn how to repair and maintain modern electric motors and systems.
Chief Minister’s Vision For Delhi
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the transition to electric power is the first and most important step towards making the city more livable. She said the government is aiming to lower the price of battery-operated vehicles so that every family owns one, thus making the technology no longer the privilege of the few. The CM further pointed out that the above measures will be instrumental in minimising toxic air levels and safeguarding the health of the city’s kids.
Growing Electric Markets
Delhi wants a larger share of its total vehicles to be electric in the coming years. This revamp combines better infrastructure with financial perks to make zero-emission travel the standard choice. These steps should encourage more battery-vehicle makers to bring their best technology to the national capital soon.
