Toyota has clearly signalled its entry into the mass-market electric vehicle space in India with the showcase of its Urban Cruiser BEV SUV concept at the Auto Expo and Bharat Mobility Expo in 2025. This reveal confirms Toyota’s plan to launch a dedicated electric SUV to compete in the fast-growing segment. The final version of this car, which will be the brand’s first locally-made all-electric model, is expected to arrive in the market in early 2026.
Shared Electric Base
The core of this new electric vehicle comes from the strong partnership between Toyota and Maruti Suzuki. The Urban Cruiser BEV is based on the same HEARTECT-e platform that underpins the upcoming Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara. Both these cars are planned to be manufactured at Suzuki’s plant in Gujarat. The joint efforts of both companies result in the electric SUV getting a platform exclusively made for electric vehicles, thus, space and efficiency being the two parameters getting maximum optimisation.
The dimensions of the 5-seater SUV are:
| Dimension | Measurement |
| Length | 4,285 mm |
| Width | 1,800 mm |
| Height | 1,640 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,700 mm |
Power, Range, Features
The electric Urban Cruiser will provide a variety of options in terms of power and range that will cater to the different needs of the customers. It is presumed that it will be equipped with robust LFP battery packs. The basic variant will come with a single-motor front-wheel drive (FWD) system, while the all-wheel drive (AWD) option that is expected to be available worldwide will feature enhanced traction control, for example, Trail Mode.
| Electric Options | Standard | Long Range |
| Battery Capacity | 49 kWh | 61 kWh |
| Max Power (Approx.) | 144 PS (106 kW) | 174 PS (128 kW) |
| Range (Claimed) | Up to 344 km (WLTP) | Up to 426 km (WLTP) |
Design and Technology
Visually, the Toyota electric concept has a clean, robust SUV look. Key design features include the closed-off grille, slim LED DRLs, and a chrome accent that lurks between the headlamps. Big, aero-optimised alloy wheels with rugged wheel cladding are standard on the car.
The passenger compartment will be modern and equipped with the latest technology, and will be almost similar to the Maruti e-Vitara’s features. The highlights include:
- A completely digital experience that includes dual digital displays integrated into the instrument cluster and infotainment for the visually impaired.
- Advanced safety tech like a 360-degree camera and the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) suite on top variants (expected to include features like Lane Keep Assist).
- Convenience features like a fixed glass sunroof, ventilated front seats, and a two-spoke steering wheel.
Rivals and Launch
The production model of the electric Urban Cruiser is expected to be priced between ₹20 Lakh and ₹30 Lakh (ex-showroom). By the time it enters the market in the first half of 2026, it will directly compete with the electric SUVs of Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara, Tata Curvv EV, and Hyundai Creta Electric, which will share a significant portion of India’s EV market, which is rapidly growing.
