Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the new-generation GLB, a compact luxury SUV with 7 seats, will be available in India. This recently debuted global model is based on the brand’s new ‘MMA’ platform. Nevertheless, the Indian market will get the GLB only in Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) variants, unlike its platform twin, the CLA.
India is Getting ICE Only
While the new GLB is sold globally with both electric (EQB) and ICE powertrains, India is expected to receive the new GLB in India, but a specific date for its arrival has not been given. The import of the vehicle as a completely built unit (CBU) reflects the company’s expectations regarding the volume of this unique 7-seat offering in the compact luxury SUV segment.
Platform and Features
The new GLB is built on the state-of-the-art ‘MMA’ platform along with the upcoming CLA. The passenger compartment will be equipped with a huge technology upgrade, which consists of a dashboard with 3 screens running the brand’s new MB.OS operating system. This new system merges most of the functions of the vehicle into the touchscreen interface, pulling the GLB into line with Mercedes’ newest design.
Design Changes Noted
The exterior look keeps the peculiar tall shape of the previous model, but new features are introduced. The front end is similar to the new CLA with the connected headlamps and a huge grille. The rear design is the most different one; it takes an upright tailgate and Kia-like inverted-U-shaped connected taillights that come with LED three-pointed stars.
Larger Interior Space
One of the major advantages of the GLB is having all three rows of seats for a total of 7 people in a rather small area. The new model now has a length of 98mm more, a width of 27mm more, and a wheelbase of 60mm more, which is supposed to give the whole cabin more space for the passengers. The second row still has the sliding and reclining feature, so that access to the third row is easy.
Launch Timeline
Mercedes-Benz has made it clear that the new GLB will be launched in India, but a specific date for its arrival has not been given. Likely, the launch will not occur in the immediate future. Nevertheless, it is expected that the interior design elements, together with the MB. The OS system will be revealed next year in the new CLA Electric, but a little later.
