VinFast’s India plans are slowly coming together, following earlier reports that the brand is preparing a broader electric lineup for the market, including the VF3, Limo Green, and VF9. The VF5 electric hatchback could be the next piece of that puzzle. After launching the VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs in India, VinFast is also looking at the VF5 as a potential entry into the more affordable end of the EV space.
Globally, the VF5 sits below the VF6 SUV and above the smaller VF3. If it comes to India, it would land squarely in the sub-4-metre electric hatchback segment, where cars like the Tata Tiago EV and Tata Punch EV currently dominate.
VinFast VF5 Battery, Range, and What It’s Like to Drive
The VinFast VF5 is sold in different configurations depending on the market. Some variants use a 29.6 kWh battery, paired with a front-mounted motor producing 95 hp and 135 Nm, with an NEDC-rated range of 268 km. Other markets get a larger 37.23 kWh battery, which boosts output to 136 hp and stretches the claimed range to 326 km.
VinFast is likely to focus on a setup that balances price and real-world range, instead of chasing outright performance figures.
VinFast VF5 Size, Design, and Road Presence
Size-wise, the VF5 is a bit smaller than the Tata Punch EV, but it makes up for that with a longer wheelbase, which should help with interior space. Ground clearance is rated at 169 mm, and although it’s a hatchback, the styling leans slightly toward the SUV side.
Flared wheel arches, black body cladding, and VinFast’s familiar front design give it a more rugged look than a typical city EV. Depending on the market, the VF5 runs on either 16-inch steel wheels or 17-inch alloy wheels.
VinFast VF5 Cabin and Features
Step inside the VF5, and the layout is simple. The cabin sticks to an all-black theme with a few silver touches, and the main focus is the 8-inch touchscreen, backed by a 7-inch digital display for the driver.
Other features include a basic audio system, air filtration, keyless entry, and USB ports for both rows. Boot space is rated at 260 litres, and folding the rear seats opens it up to around 900 litres when you need extra room.
VinFast VF5 Expected Price and Competition
If launched, the VinFast VF5 price in India is expected to start around ₹12 lakh. Final pricing will depend on which battery option VinFast chooses to offer.
At that level, it would sit above the Tata Tiago EV and overlap with the Tata Punch EV, especially the long-range variants. That places it in a highly competitive space where customers want compact size, decent range, and SUV-inspired styling without paying a premium.
Why the VF5 Matters
If VinFast brings the VF5 to India, it would be entering the EV segment where most customers are actually shopping. The car’s size, range, and feature mix feel right for people looking at their first electric car, especially those who want an alternative to the usual Tata options.
Nothing has been verified yet, but the VF5 seems to be in line with VinFast’s India strategy of starting with more affordable electric vehicles and ultimately moving to larger, more premium models.
