VinFast Files Patent For New Flagship EV In India

VinFast has filed the design patent for the VF8 Electric in India. This hints at a possible future launch of the premium SUV soon

VinFast VF8 Design Patent Filed In India

      Quick Reads

      • VinFast has filed the design patent for the new-gen VF8 in India
      • The electric SUV gets a claimed 500km NEDC range overseas
      • VF8 sits above the VF6 and VF7 in VinFast’s global lineup
      • Patent filing does not officially confirm an India launch yet

VinFast has filed a design patent for the second-generation VinFast VF8 in India. It is the first SUV from the brand to get a second-generation update and was unveiled in Vietnam earlier. This tactical filing signals VinFast’s intent to introduce its premier electric SUV to India in the near future.

      A More Futuristic Design Approach

Vinfast VF 8 in patent images

The patent images are quite similar to the recently unveiled Vietnam-spec VF8, although there are some minor differences. Like other modern VinFast cars, the VF8 features the iconic ‘V’-shaped LED logo at the front along with segmented DRLs and an aggressive bumper design.

The second-generation VF8 is noticeably sharper and looks a lot more futuristic when compared to the older model. It also gets redesigned alloy wheels, a much cleaner side profile and a more sculpted rear section with connected LED tail lamps. But, interestingly, the patent image also suggests that the Indian version might not get a panoramic roof like the smaller VF6 or the VF7, which are sold overseas.

      More Details about the VF8

      Vinfast VF 8 in india

The Vietnam-spec VF8 is powered by a 60.13 kWh battery pack paired to a front-mounted electric motor which makes 170 kW (228 hp) of peak power and 330 Nm of peak torque. The claimed range is up to 500km on a single charge.

The newer-generation model also gets revised dimensions and is a little smaller than the older one. Inside the cabin, the VF8 is equipped with a redesigned dashboard layout, a new two-spoke steering wheel and a 12.9-inch touchscreen display.

      Our Take

Globally, the VF8 sits just above the VF6 and VF7 in the brand’s electric SUV lineup and is positioned as a premium car. If it is launched in India, the VF8 could become the brand’s flagship SUV.

With this patent, the brand confirms its long-term strategy for the Indian market. If VinFast decides to bring the VF8 to India, it would slot in as a premium flagship EV above the VF7 and take on electric SUVs in the Rs 35 lakh-plus segment. However, for now, the patent filing only confirms that VinFast is keeping its options open for the future.
