Expert Verdict

If you have dedicated home charging, the Tata Nexon EV (45 kWh) works well as an urban commuter with the ability to handle occasional intercity trips. It offers a practical, real-world range, plenty of features, and benefits from Tata’s wide network. However, buyers prioritising family-friendly space should instead consider the MG Windsor EV.

Tata Nexon EV Design

Exterior

When the Tata Nexon EV facelift arrived in late 2024, Tata had completely overhauled its visual identity by drawing heavily from the Tata Curvv (then concept), ditching the older, rounded aesthetics for a futuristic fascia. At the front, it gets a modern split-headlamp arrangement, positioning the main full-LED clusters lower on the sharply sculpted bumper, which is flanked by functional air curtains.

The defining feature is undeniably the full-width LED light bar stretching across the nose, adding welcome/goodbye animations and doubling as a charge indicator.

The Medium Range offers a solid 205 mm of unladen ground clearance, while the heavier Long Range sits slightly lower at 190 mm. The Red Dark Edition drapes the exterior in a gloss black look, sitting on 16-inch black alloys, featuring subtle red accents.

Interior: High-Tech Ambience with a Few Rough Edges

Inside, the layout mirrors the ICE Nexon, except for differences in upholstery colour options and subtle blue stitching to remind you it’s an EV. The fundamental design is the same as that offered on the Tata Curvv EV, and it does feel clean and premium.

Your attention is hijacked by twin high-res screens and a two-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, which we have seen in many Tata cars now.

What’s also undistinguished from other modern Tata cars is the touch-capacitive setup for the HVAC controls. The old rotary gear selector is gone, replaced by a conventional lever. A rotary dial remains, but it now handles drive modes, though it can be slightly sluggish to engage on the fly.

Build Quality

The Nexon EV feels robustly built. The interior, too, adopts many soft-touch materials with the facelift, though a keen eye will still spot a few fit-and-finish inconsistencies.

Tata Nexon EV Features

The 12.3-inch Cinematic HD touchscreen, tuned by Harman, is one of the best in the class, offering excellent resolution, snappy touch responses, and seamless wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster is equally impressive, offering deep customisation and the highly practical ability to cast navigation maps right into your line of sight.

The infotainment system also supports voice assistants with over 200 native commands across multiple regional Indian languages. The Nexon EV also gets the Arcade.ev app suite, which allows you to stream Amazon Prime or Disney+ Hotstar, listen to podcasts, or even play games while you are waiting for the battery to juice up. Audio duties are handled by a stellar JBL 9-speaker system.

Moreover, Tata has packed the Nexon EV to the gills with modern comforts. You get front ventilated seats, an air purifier, rear AC vents, multi-colour ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and an electric tailgate.

The iRA.ev smartphone app allows you to give remote commands alongside accessing details like your charge history and driving data. It also features a charge point locator with thousands of listed chargers to take the anxiety out of long-distance trip planning.

Tata Nexon EV Performance & Range

Tata has smartly switched to prismatic cells for the Nexon EV, which offer a 15 per cent bump in energy density, allowing engineers to squeeze a larger 45 kWh battery into the exact same physical footprint as the outgoing 40.5 kWh pack. On paper, this stretches the MIDC claimed range to 489 km (a 24 km improvement over the older LR model). The Medium Range variant, on the other hand, continues with a 30 kWh battery and offers a claimed 325 km on a single charge.

To put things in perspective, the Punch EV (40 kWh) claims 468 km, while the aerodynamically superior Curvv EV pushes out to 502 km (45 kWh) and 585 km (55 kWh).

Tata’s official C75 estimate (which is a closer number to real-world range) for the Nexon EV Long Range stands at 350-370 km.

The Nexon EV Long Range makes 145 hp and 215 Nm of instant torque. Pin it, and the Nexon EV will clock 0-100 km/h in a brisk 8.9 seconds before hitting a top speed of 150 km/h. But there are three drive modes to alter the throttle response, including Eco, City, and Sport modes.

Eco mode is unapologetically range-conscious, restricting power output to around 65 per cent, even if you bury the accelerator into the floorboard. While useful for conservative driving, the lack of punch becomes glaringly obvious when you are trying to execute a tight overtake. We feel the city mode is the more balanced one, and most of the owners would find themselves using that for the majority of their driving.

Tata Nexon EV Ride & Handling

Because the Nexon EV is essentially an ICE platform adapted for electric duty, Tata’s engineers had to noticeably stiffen the suspension to manage the substantial heft of the battery pack. The ride is decidedly firm, though thankfully not harsh.

At typical city crawling speeds, the Nexon EV effortlessly glides over minor road imperfections, though you will definitely feel the thud of deeper potholes and sharper bumps making their way into the cabin. However, it never feels fragile; in fact, this stiffness lends the SUV a rugged, composed character over broken tarmac.

At highway speeds, the NexonEV ride smoothens out nicely, settling into a compliant rhythm that, while not exactly plush, is actually comfortable for long highway stints.

What also impresses at those highway speeds is the incredible straight-line stability. Thanks to the heavy battery floor, the centre of gravity is wonderfully low, keeping body roll strictly in check, while the steering wheel offers a satisfying, reassuring heft that connects you well to the road.

The 16-inch alloys are wrapped in 215/60 section EV-specific, low-rolling-resistance tyres designed to maximise range.

Bringing this heavy EV to a halt is a drama-free affair. The Long Range variant benefits from the addition of rear disc brakes. Tata has also refined the regenerative braking system with the facelift, which can be toggled via tactile steering-mounted paddle shifters. There are four distinct levels on offer, while we found Level 2 to be the sweet spot for daily driving.

Tata Nexon EV Safety

★ 10/10

Tata Motors has been the flagbearer for high crashworthiness amongst Indian cars, scoring 5-star crash test ratings for fun. The Nexon EV is no different as well, with a 5-star crash test rating in the Bharat NCAP tests.

In terms of safety equipment, the Nexon EV is packed with most of the advanced tech we have come to see in the mass market. Crucially, Tata has recently bolstered the Nexon EV with a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS suite on its top-tier trims, bringing active, radar-based safety tech like autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, and traffic sign recognition into the fold. Other notable features include a high-res 360-degree camera system, six airbags as standard, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Tata Nexon EV Space & Comfort

Frunk Space, Boot Space, Cabin Space

The Nexon EV offers a decent cabin footprint for the segment with adequate Knee room and legroom for average-sized adults.

However, the Nexon’s aggressively swooping roofline that gives the SUV its sporty, aerodynamic stance heavily cuts into the rear cabin space. If you regularly ferry passengers who are 6 feet or taller, they will find the rear headroom uncomfortably tight, with their heads likely brushing the roof lining over rougher roads.

On the storage front, Tata has offered a neatly engineered 11.6-litre frunk (front trunk). While it isn’t massive, it is a brilliant, isolated space to permanently stash your portable charging cables or a tyre inflator, freeing up valuable room in the main boot.

At the back, the electric tailgate opens up to a highly usable 350 litres of boot space. The cargo area is deep, practically squared off, and easily swallows a weekend’s worth of luggage for a family of four. For complete peace of mind on Indian highways, lifting the boot floor reveals a proper spare wheel.

Headroom, Sitting Posture, Under-thigh support

Visually and physically, the front seats feel spacious and are notably well-bolstered, keeping you securely anchored through corners. However, because of the large battery pack underneath, the cabin floor is naturally raised. This means you will find yourself sitting with your knees noticeably higher compared to the standard ICE Nexon, which slightly compromises under-thigh support on longer journeys.

Tata Nexon EV Charging & Warranty

★ 8/10

Tata has aggressively raised the bar for the new 45 kWh battery pack by introducing a “Lifetime HV Battery Warranty”. In practical, road-legal terms, this translates to 15 years and unlimited kilometres of coverage for the first owner.

Living with the Nexon EV day-to-day means familiarising yourself with its charging ecosystem, and you have a few distinct ways to top up. If you opt to install the 7.2 kW AC charger at your home or office, you are looking at roughly 6 hours to juice the larger 45 kWh pack from 10 to 100 per cent.

For occasional travel or emergencies, Tata provides a portable charger in the boot that plugs directly into any standard 15 Amp household socket. However, a 10 to 100 per cent charge takes around 15 hours for the 45 kWh pack (10.5 hours with the 30 kWh variant).

When you are out on the highway, hunting down a 50 kW DC fast charger is your best bet, as it will blast the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in 56 minutes.

A practical addition to the updated Nexon EV is its bidirectional charging capability. The Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology lets you draw up to 3.3 kVA to power laptops, camping equipment, or appliances during a trip. The Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) feature allows you to output up to 5 kVA to jump-start another compatible EV if a friend runs out of juice.

Tata Nexon EV Service & Network

Tata Motors benefits immensely from its synergy with Tata Power, which currently commands one of the largest, most reliable fast-charging footprints in the country. Couple this with the onboard iRA.ev app’s integrated charger locator, which maps out over 9,000 public chargers from various vendors and reduces highway range anxiety to a large extent.

However, the Nexon EV loses crucial points when it comes to after-sales service. While the vehicle itself is a brilliant piece of engineering, Tata’s after-sales service network remains a notorious gamble. For routine EV maintenance, which mostly involves running software diagnostics, topping up fluids, and basic suspension checks, the experience is acceptable and remarkably cheap on the wallet.

However, if you run into a complex issue, like a battery error, the cracks in the system become glaringly obvious. The reality on the ground is that many local dealership technicians still lack deep, hands-on EV diagnostic training. The standard operating procedure often involves parking the car and waiting for a specialised engineer from Tata Motors HQ to remotely diagnose or physically visit the service centre. It is not uncommon for owners to wait over a week just to get a clear diagnostic report on a battery fault.
