The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation is launching a major public-private partnership to install 100 new electric vehicle charging stations across the city, aiming to meet rising demand for electric vehicles. With this step, the Ludhiana MC aims to make room for more EVs on the roads. A proposal for 100 new electric vehicle charging stations has been put forward across the city, addressing a long-standing need for improved charging infrastructure.
The project will be carried out through a public–private partnership. The proposal is expected to be taken up at an upcoming meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC).
Partnership Model Approved
The Municipal Corporation is moving ahead with a PPP project under which the selected private firm will bear all installation and operational costs for 100 charging stations. The MC will not have to pay for any financial burden, making it a financially wise way to develop the required infrastructure.
Addressing the Infrastructure Gap
The number of electric two-wheelers, e-rickshaws, and electric four-wheeled vehicles has increased significantly, creating a gap in public charging infrastructure in Ludhiana. Previously, a single charging point installed at MC’s Zone D office was removed because it was hardly used. The new plan directly addresses the persistent problems faced by the residents due to limited charging options, with the intention of making it widely accessible across the city.
Strategic Site Selection
The private firm executing the installation will conduct a meticulous site survey to identify the best locations for installing 100 stations along main roads and high-traffic corridors, with a preference for parking spots near popular markets. Key possibilities include prominent areas such as Sarabha Nagar Market, BRS Nagar Market, Model Town Market, and the Municipal Corporation’s multi-story parking site in the vicinity of Mata Rani Chowk.
Positive Public Reaction
The initiative has generated strong public support among city residents. With the rising prices of conventional fuels, electric vehicles (EVs) are being perceived as a viable alternative. The more charging stations that are set up, the more accessible and convenient EVs would become for existing and potential owners, even if they have to pay for the charging service.
E-Bus Depot Work
In a separate but related development, construction of the MC’s e-bus depots is set to begin shortly. Senior authorities have issued work orders to contractors. The existing bus depot on Hambran Road will be temporarily vacated for reconstruction, which is expected to be completed in about six months.
