      Expert Verdict

The BYD eMax 7 serves as a dedicated 6- and 7-seater electric multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). It features revisions to suit Indian operating requirements. The vehicle’s dedicated powertrain architecture enables it to offer long-range performance for urban users in India. With updated tech integrations, the BYD eMax 7 is refined in comfort and appeal for India’s user base.

      BYD eMax 7 Design

      ★ 7/10

      Exterior:

The BYD eMax 7 comes with a pure-flowing design aesthetics without using many opposing elements. The fascia is a resonance of this statement; it comes with simplistic body-coloured panels with an element of silver treatment, which houses the BYD logo. Further, it gets a well-sculpted and sloping bonnet line that merges with the sharp-edged crystal LED multi-pod lighting uniquely. There are also aerodynamic and sculpted air intakes at the lower bumper region. These provide the eMax 7 with a simple but effective design appeal true to BYD’s original design DNA.

However, there is also an opposing appeal among customers due to its van-like styling. We feel that although the design features contemporary elements, it could have features more sharp design language to suit the tastes of new-age customers in India. That said, it still has decent contemporary design elements to attain the tagline of a premium MPV for the Indian market.

Moreover, the eMax 7 gets highly appealing paint schemes that blend with the design, providing a luxury appeal. Speaking of which, there are precisely four distinct colour options on offer that suit different customer trends: quarts blue, cosmos black, crystal white and harbour grey. These unique colour palettes make the BYD eMax 7 a premium and luxury MPV suited for diverse customers.

Towards the sides, the BYD eMax 7 gets an MPV silhouette measuring 4170 mm in length and featuring a 2800 mm wheelbase. Also, the clean, contoured lines used on the side provide the eMax 7 with a much stronger stance. These character lines provide the BYD eMax 7 with a significant high-strength MPV appeal. The alloy wheels wrapped around 225/55 R17-sized tyres complement the premium nature of the MPV, ensuring it is a style statement from this angle.

At the rear, the BYD eMax 7 flaunts connected LED taillights placed across the full width of the rear section, featuring a dynamic sequential turn indicator setup. The prominent roof spoiler, as a seamless continuum to the glass area, sets the rear end bold in appearance, all while nurturing simple design attributes such as BYD badging and reflector elements to stay unique in appeal.

      Interior:

The interior section features seamless tech integrations, adopting a dual-tone upholstery and trim theme to set the tone for the signature BYD luxury. The seating layout carries forward this BYD trait, featuring brown and black synthetic leatherette upholstery. To suit the specific tastes of customers, the eMax 7 comes in a 2nd-row captain seat arrangement or 7-seater configuration. The 7-seater layout is made available with a 60:40 split seat arrangement for better space.

Further, the dashboard is designed with respect to the exterior elements, following the simple but luxurious design approach. In fact, the dashboard features soft-touch elements, followed by a glossy black centre console, boasting a glass-like gear shifter. Additionally, the steering wheel comes with black and silver elements, providing the same luxury appeal, not enough stressed.

The use of multiple switches on the centre console is also a neat addition, which makes the BYD eMax 7 more user-friendly. However, the cabin design to us remains overly simple, even though the layout features digital integrations; also, the digital text on the screen is too small, which can cause difficulties for older persons. Nevertheless, the cabin and cockpit are the places where users will love to be, thanks to the comfortable seating arrangement and multi-tech feature integration.

      Build Quality:

The overall build quality and finishing of the panels and body fitments are up to par with BYD’s design appeal. The textured feel of the dashboard elements is also top-notch. The setup of the cabin elements is ideal, featuring ergonomic layouts. The surface treatment of the upholstery and steering wheel feels top-class. The body panel alignments are perfect, true to its premium identity.

      BYD eMax 7 Features

      ★ 8.5/10

The BYD eMax 7 is a feature-rich MPV offered in the Indian automotive market; it comes with a 12.8-inch (32.5 cm) rotatable infotainment display for user-specific requirements, supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, followed by a 6-speaker setup for an immersive experience. The system also comes with voice command functions and satellite navigation for a better experience.

Meanwhile, for comfort, the BYD eMax 7 comes with ventilated front driver’s seats and a front co-passenger seat, ideal for hot summer conditions in the country. The driver’s seat gets 6-way electrical adjustments to ensure a better posture, enhancing comfort and convenience. Also, the front passenger seat gets 4-way electrical adjustments for an equally superb comfort experience.

Additionally, for better drive-centric appeal, the dashboard houses a 5-inch (12.7 cm) TFT LCD instrument cluster displaying multiple significant vehicle information. Other than these feature integrations, the BYD eMax 7 also gets a 12 V mobile charging socket, wireless smartphone charging pad, NFC key card, keyless entry and start, upper AC vents, electrically openable trunk, among other features; these ensure to enhance comfort and convenience during daily operations.

However, the only downside to these is the lack of more physical buttons, especially to control the AC system; BYD could have offered more physical switchgear on the dashboard for easy usability.

BYD eMax 7 Performance & Range

      ★ 9/10

The BYD eMax 7 comes in two variants: Comfort and Superior, both featuring an AC PMSM (permanent magnet synchronous motor). The BYD eMax 7 Comfort variant delivers 120 kW of peak power, while the BYD eMax 7 Superior trim offers 150 kW of peak power. Torque output from both these variants is the same; it delivers 310 Nm of maximum torque. Thanks to this configuration, the eMax 7 is built to reach triple-digit speeds of 180 kmph. Range output is different for both trims:

The BYD eMax 7 Comfort trim delivers a MIDC range of 485 km on a full charge. Meanwhile, the BYD eMax 7 Superior trim provides a 530 km NEDC range on a fully charged battery.

Although these above-mentioned details are spec sheet attributes, under real-world conditions, the BYD eMax 7 does deliver instantaneous torque, with no lag, to reach triple-digit speeds quickly under acceleration. This factor enables drivers to overtake in highway driving conditions seamlessly, even with 6-7 occupants seated. Also, energy efficiency is managed well. But, under aggressive acceleration, we find significant wheelspin and less traction from the front drive wheels.

That being stated, the BYD eMax 7 Comfort variant reaches 0-100 kmph under 10.1 seconds, and the Superior trim takes about 8.6 seconds, which is honestly quite fast and thrilling for an electric MPV that also has to tow the additional battery weight.

What about battery efficiency management? The BYD eMax 7 integrates an efficiently calibrated regenerative braking system with different modes; these maximise the conversion of kinetic energy under braking into usable electrical energy stored in the battery. The multimode system ensures a balance of performance, be it when required for aggressive acceleration or for energy efficiency.

Apart from these attributes, the BYD eMax 7 in India, with a front-wheel drivetrain configuration, ensures sufficient rear-end space to accommodate a larger BYD blade battery for better range and energy-efficient performance. The drive electronics are situated in the front portion, providing space for the lower floorboard to integrate the large battery pack setup.

BYD eMax 7 Ride & Handling

      ★ 8/10

The BYD eMax 7 is primarily designed as a family-centric MPV; hence, the vehicle leans towards offering better driving comfort rather than full-fledged cornering performance. Its dynamic setup balances urban operating needs, prioritising high-speed stability and superior ride quality. The vehicle gets softly tuned damping systems to ensure better bump absorption. Slow-speed operations are significantly quieter and smoother. Meanwhile, minor lateral movement is present.

However, even though the steering feels light and effortless in traffic conditions, it feels overly light and artificial at high speeds (sport mode), which can be a bummer, especially with the high-performance capacity delivered by the powertrain.

      BYD eMax 7 Safety

      ★ 9/10

The BYD eMax 7 comes with multiple safety features to maximise occupant protection; this includes systems such as a brake override system (BOS), autonomous emergency braking system, auto hold, adaptive cruise control, predictive collision warning, and rear collision warning, among others. Apart from these, the eMax 7 gets rear cross-traffic alert, rear cross-traffic brake, lane departure assist systems, and an emergency lane-keeping assist system.

Other than these active elements, the BYD eMax 7 in India comes with front airbags, along with side airbags for front-row occupants and side curtain airbags (front and rear). Additionally, for better vehicle control, the eMax 7 gets ABS, electronic stability control (ESC), traction control system (TCS), and vehicle dynamic control system. All these elements combined make this car a safe MPV.

Nevertheless, the BYD eMax 7 is not crash-tested by Bharat NCAP for official crash-protection data.

BYD eMax 7 Space & Comfort

      ★ 8/10

The BYD eMax 7 is designed specifically with an emphasis on enhancing the chauffeur-driven experience; the vehicle offers generous legroom and kneeroom for rear-row occupants. The eMax 7 offers good comfort for middle row occupants, featuring a flat floorboard, since it does not feature a transmission tunnel. However, the 3rd row seating can feel a bit tight for seating adult occupants. Nevertheless, sliding the second row seat a bit further opens up the space. In terms of seating comfort, the bench offers sufficient bolstering and cushioning for enhancing comfort.

BYD eMax 7 Charging & Warranty

      ★ 9.5/10

The BYD eMax7 comes with a Blade Battery configuration (71.4 kWh capacity battery) that typically takes 37 minutes to recharge from 0-80 % state of charge (SOC). Due to this fast charging capacity, the eMax 7 is highly preferred for long urban trips, hopping from one city to another, provided that there is ideal charging infrastructure along the determined route. Also, do note that under aggressive acceleration, the range does peter down, which means more recharging intervals on trips.

For complete peace of mind, BYD offers the eMax 7 with 8 years or 1.60 lakh kms (whichever comes first) warranty for the high-voltage powertrain. Under this, the traction battery, motor, motor controller, DC-DC assembly, HV electric control assembly, and OBC are covered extensively. Meanwhile, the comprehensive vehicle warranty is 6 years or 1.50 lakh kms (whichever comes first). Thanks to this warranty coverage, the BYD eMax 7 is a strategic investment for customers.

BYD eMax 7 Service & Network

      ★ 8/10

BYD India has an extensive showroom and service network in India. The company has 48 authorised showroom networks across 40 different cities and has 18 dealer partners. BYD India is progressively increasing the count in phases to meet customer demand. The company has a sales presence across tier 1 and tier 2 cities. They have establishments in Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat, Delhi NCR, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Service requirements are also taken care of by most facilities in the respective States.

      Who should buy this?

The BYD eMax 7 is meant for customers looking for an electric powertrain-propelled 6-7 seater multi-purpose vehicle in India. The eMax 7 is meant for those seeking an ultra-comfortable 6-seater MPV layout, with adequate bolstering for comfort. That said, the 7-seater layout is also top-notch. Hence, the eMax 7 is meant for business executives who are driven daily through city traffic. It is also for those customers seeking a family MPV, benefiting from multiple feature integrations and comfort.
