After years of speculation, Bajaj has finally revealed the launch timeline of its first electric motorcycle. During its latest earnings call, the company confirmed that the motorcycle is under development and is expected to arrive around FY28, which runs from April 2027 to March 2028.
But, we are a bit surprised, as the brand also revealed that the motorcycle will make its debut in international markets first, before eventually making its way to India. While the company hasn’t explained the reasoning behind this radical strategy, it is quite a deviation from the brand’s usual ‘domestic market first’ strategy.
What Could The New Bajaj Electric Bike Be?
The upcoming model is likely to be a premium commuter with performance equivalent to its 150cc motorcycles, where it could rival motorcycles from Indian electric motorcycle brands such as Oben Electric, Revolt, and even the Ultraviolette (for city commutes, as the UV bikes have a lot of performance for the highway). More technical details are expected to surface closer to the launch date. Hopefully, we could also get to see the bikes’ test mule in the flesh soon.
Bajaj Chetak Production Increase
The brand has also announced plans to increase production capacity for the Chetak range to meet rising demand. The current demand for the Bajaj Chetak has outpaced the production capacity of the brand, and the brand intends to fix it first with an increase in assembly and production capacity.
Bajaj’s Electric Bike’s Market Impact
Electric motorcycles are inevitable in India. The electric motorcycle segment in India could be small right now, but it is a budding one. With new battery technology and growing buyer interest, the manufacturers have now started heavily investing in it, like VinFast’s Sulad concept-based bike in India, which was patented earlier this week, and the Oben Rorr Evo, which was launched in India a few months ago.
What we think is Bajaj’s entry into this segment will significantly increase the competition, as none of the other manufacturers have the scale and capacity or strong R&D department as Bajaj’s. If priced correctly, this could very well become one of the most important launches in the category, and repeat the same sales trajectory that Bajaj saw with the recently updated Chetak range, which now includes the Bajaj Chetak C2501, C3001, C3501, C3502, and C3503.
