Jaguar is finally pulling the curtain back on its most ambitious and critical reinvention to date. Ahead of the full global debut later this year, the British legacy carmaker has officially announced that its upcoming all-electric, four-door Grand Tourer will be named the ‘Type 01’.
This will not just be a new model but the stepping stone of a complete brand reset which was announced in December 2024. Moving away from its mass-market luxury aspirations, the Type 01 represents Jaguar’s metamorphosis into an ultra-exclusive, low-volume manufacturer of pure-electric vehicles.
Decoding the Type 01 Nomenclature
The naming strategy is a carefully decided brand play of both the heritage and future ambition. According to Jaguar, the ‘Type’ prefix directly links the new EV to the brand’s legendary motorsport and sports car lineage, paying homage to icons like the Le Mans-winning C-Type, the D-Type, and the universally adored E-Type.
The numbers, however, tell the story of the future. The ‘0’ symbolises the vehicle’s zero-tailpipe-emission powertrain, while the ‘1’ denotes its status as the absolute first model of Jaguar’s next-generation, electric-only era.
Jaguar Type 01 Powertrain and Performance: A 1,000 HP Juggernaut
While Jaguar claims the potential elite customer set for its new portfolio cares more about design than powertrain, the Type 01 is engineered to be a ballistic missile on wheels.
Built on an entirely new 850V electrical architecture, the four-door GT will feature a massive 120 kWh battery pack.
Jaguar has confirmed that the flagship variant will utilise a tri-motor configuration. This setup will churn out an astonishing power output of over 735 kW (1,000 horsepower) and a massive 1,300 Nm of peak torque. Despite this immense performance, the Type 01 is targeting a highly practical driving range (WLTP-rated) of nearly 430 miles (692 km), backed by ultra-fast DC charging capabilities of up to 350 kW.
Apart from deep reserves of performance, the car will justify its luxurious intentions with twin-valve active dampers. Jaguar has ruled out any possibilities of a range-extender sort of model.
Jaguar Type 01 GT: Radical Design
Abandoning the previous BMW or Audi-competed market to target the premium players in the automotive market, Jaguar is paying a lot of attention to detail towards design and luxury.
While the polarising Type 00 concept revealed during the brand reset announcement was a 2-door, the Type 01 has a more practical 4-door setup.
Recent spy images of camouflaged test mules reveal a vehicle with an extremely long bonnet, a low-slung roofline, and a sleek fastback silhouette characterised by squared-out, minimalist lines. Even the base model will ride on massive 23-inch alloy wheels, though 21-inch options will be available for regions with poor road conditions.
Jaguar Type 01 Launch Timelines
The Type 01 will be revealed later in 2026, while the expected launch date is the first half of 2027. The Type 01 will be positioned well above mainstream luxury, aiming directly at the likes of Porsche and stepping into the territory of Bentley and Aston Martin.
Jaguar has also confirmed that camouflaged prototypes will be performing public demonstrations at events like the Monaco Formula E race soon.
