- New Yamaha patent reveals additional details of its electric sport bike
- The design looks to be inspired by the Proto BEV concept
- AC fast charging capability has been confirmed, as it gets a Type 2 socket
- Proportions are quite similar to the Yamaha YZF-R7
Yamaha recently filed a new patent application for its upcoming electric bike. The design in the patent images clearly shows an electric bike based on the Proto BEV concept, which was unveiled at the 2025 Tokyo Mobility Show. All of this hints that the brand is still actively developing the high-end electric sport bike, and we could get to see the production-spec model soon in the near future.
Proto BEV’s Influence Is Clearly Visible
The patent images reveal a motorcycle that closely resembles Yamaha’s Proto BEV concept. It gets a beam-style frame wrapped around a large battery pack, giving it a chunky look, and its overall dimensions appear to be quite similar to the Yamaha YZF-R7. Also, a more road-focused design suggests Yamaha is moving beyond the concept stage, and we could see a production-ready electric sportbike platform soon.
Unique ABS Layout Detailed
Interestingly, the patent is not focused on the powertrain but on the motorcycle’s braking system. Like several modern electric bikes, the design replaces the traditional foot-operated rear brake pedal with a left-hand lever, which should technically give you more control when riding. Yamaha has also positioned the hydraulic control unit just behind the steering head instead of beneath the seat. This arrangement should shorten the brake line length and improve ABS response time, making the bike a lot safer.

Fast Charging Capability Revealed
Another big revelation is the inclusion of AC fast charging in the bike. Patent documents also show a Type 2 charging socket, similar to the system used on the upcoming Honda WN7 electric motorcycle. The setup is expected to support both 7.4 kW single-phase and 22 kW three-phase AC charging, which should allow significantly faster charging than conventional household sockets.
The charge controller is mounted just above the battery pack, while the motor controller sits lower in the chassis. Yamaha has also designed the battery enclosure using die-cast aluminium, which will act as a structural component of the sport bike.

Years Of Development Behind The Scenes
This is not Yamaha’s first electric sport bike rodeo. The company previously showcased concepts such as the PES1 (TOKYO MOTOR SHOW 2013) and PES2 (TOKYO MOTOR SHOW 2015) over a decade ago, while more recent patents have highlighted work on battery packaging, cooling systems and performance-focused electric motorcycle architectures. The latest filing suggests Yamaha’s EV motorcycle programme remains active despite the relatively slow growth in the global electric bike market.
Our Opinion
While Yamaha has not confirmed production plans for this electric bike, the latest patent filing shows that development is still ongoing behind the scenes. With fast-charging capability, a dedicated EV chassis and design cues inspired by the Proto BEV concept, Yamaha appears to be laying the groundwork for what could eventually become its first electric R-series-style motorcycle. Also, we think that Yamaha is waiting for Honda to roll out the WN7 electric bike, and see how the market responds. If the market reception of the Honda WN7 is good, Yamaha will be one of the first Japanese manufacturers to come up with a rival for it.
