      • MG Introduces Taxi-Focused Windsor EV Commute Variant at ₹13.49 Lakh

MG Introduces Taxi-Focused Windsor EV Commute Variant at ₹13.49 Lakh

Retaining its “lounge-like” rear cabin experience, the new ₹13.49 lakh MG Windsor EV Commute variant is engineered specifically for premium fleet and airport ride-hailing services

      MG Windsor EV Taxi Variant

JSW MG Motor India is taking a shot at the premium fleet segment, introducing a separate fleet variant of its best-selling electric vehicle, the Windsor EV.  This new variant, named as Commute, is tailored for corporate fleets, premium ride-hailing services, and airport operations. MG has stripped away the “nice-to-have” amenities while retaining Windsor’s core strengths.

At ₹13.49 lakh, the MG Windsor EV Commute is an incredibly focused product. It entirely bypasses the traditional budget fleet aesthetic, offering a premium, highly spacious alternative for commercial operators who want to provide a superior cabin experience with the operating economics of a BEV.

Pricing and Positioning: Trimming the Premium

Priced at ₹13.49 lakh (ex-showroom), the Windsor EV Commute sits at the very base of the lineup. It undercuts the standard entry-level ‘Excite’ variant by approximately ₹61,000, which is primarily aimed at private buyers.

Crucially for fleet operators concerned about upfront acquisition costs, the Commute variant is eligible for MG’s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) rental program. This drastically lowers the initial purchase barrier, allowing commercial operators to pay a nominal fee for the battery based on their actual running mileage.

The Cabin Experience: Built for the Backseat

The standard Windsor EV is renowned for its cavernous interior, and the Commute variant heavily leverages this specific trait. Aimed at premium commuter services, the vehicle retains the essential comfort parameters that matter most to rear-seat passengers.

It continues to offer multi-level reclining rear seats with a 60:40 split, adjustable headrests, and dedicated rear AC vents. Furthermore, the massive 604-litre boot capacity makes it an incredibly capable vehicle for heavy-luggage airport runs; this give it a major advantage over standard compact sedans typically used in taxi fleets.

To achieve the ₹61,000 price reduction, MG has trimmed some non-essential aesthetic and tech features:

      • What is Removed: The massive 10.1-inch central touchscreen has been ditched in favour of a basic infotainment system offering FM, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity. Automatic climate control is swapped out for a manual AC unit. On the outside, the alloy wheels are traded for 17-inch silver steel rims.
      • What Remains: Despite being a taxi variant, the vehicle still looks thoroughly modern. It retains the flush-fitting door handles, LED projector headlamps, and ORVM-mounted turn indicators. The driver also benefits from the standard 7-inch fully digital LCD instrument cluster, cruise control, tilt-and-telescopic steering, power windows, and a keyless smart start system. In terms of safety, it features all-wheel disc brakes, dual airbags, hill-hold assist, hill descent control, and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Windsor EV Taxi Variant: Powertrain, Battery, and Range

Mechanically, the Commute variant is identical to its private-buyer standard sibling. It houses the same 38 kWh lithium-ion battery pack paired with a front-axle-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor.

This setup generates 134 bhp of power and 200 Nm of peak torque. For commercial drivers, range is the ultimate metric. The Windsor Commute packs an ARAI-certified range of 332 km, which translates to a highly reliable 200 to 250 km in real-world, stop-and-go city traffic.

When downtime equates to lost revenue, charging speed is vital. Using a 45 kW DC fast charger, the battery can replenish from 20% to 80% in approximately 45 minutes. A standard 7.4 kW AC charger will take roughly 7 hours to achieve a full 10% to 100% charge during overnight halts.
