India’s passenger electric vehicle market has become more competitive because carmakers are introducing new electric vehicle models and expanding their electric vehicle product lines. Tata Motors holds the top market position with over 40 per cent market share, while Mahindra & Mahindra increases its market share by 6% through the introduction of new electric SUV models. The Mahindra XEV 9S has become popular because it shows the rising market rivalry between the two companies.

EV Market Competition
The competition between Tata Motors and Mahindra has become stronger as both companies introduce new electric SUVs. Tata Motors maintains its number one spot in India’s electric vehicle market while Mahindra & Mahindra successfully attracts buyers to its latest electric vehicle models. Mahindra delivered more than 3500 Mahindra XEV 9S units to dealerships throughout India during February 2026. Interestingly, the electric SUV managed to outsell the combined sales of the Tata Harrier ICE version and the Tata Harrier EV during the same month.
XEV 9S Sales Growth
Mahindra sold 3,539 units of the Mahindra XEV 9S in February 2026, showing a big jump compared to the previous month. In January 2026, the company had dispatched only 612 units, which means the SUV recorded a month-on-month sales growth of 478.27 per cent.
The XEV 9S is based on Mahindra’s INGLO electric platform, which also supports other EV models such as the Mahindra XEV 9e and the Mahindra BE 6. In February 2026, Mahindra registered good sales figures in all its electric vehicle models. The firm also disposed of 1,889 Mahindra XEV 9e units and 1,104 units of Mahindra BE 6, indicating that there was an increased demand for the newer EV models.

EV Segment Competition
The sales figures for February 2026 indicate that competition in the Indian electric SUV market is becoming more intense.
