Expert Verdict

The Ather Rizta S moves away from Ather’s intentional design attribution of a sporty electric scooter to a much more utilitarian silhouette. It delivers good torque without causing sudden wheel spins or jerky movement – it is predictable. It’s perfect for riders who need different ride modes for adaptability. With 12-inch wheels, the scooter is designed for easy commutes, and the high ground clearance is a bonus on Indian roads. It also comes with a solid add-on warranty for peace of mind.

Ather Rizta S Design

Exterior:

The Ather Rizta S has a strong design attribution featuring broader panelling with contours enhancing the vehicle’s appeal to a much more premium characterisation. The flat-faced apron construction carries this design nature, with a horizontal LED lighting strip offering a premium look. The LED headlight also integrates a DRL with turn indicator placement for a neat and simple appeal. The LED headlight sits embedded below, giving the vehicle a user-friendly characterisation.

Towards the side section, the Ather Rizta S does not feature the slim panelling typically boasted by sporty commuter electric scooters; instead, the Rizta S carries a smooth panel construction, enhancing a seamless architecture ideal for family use, lending it a significant road presence. The LED taillight extending slightly towards the side panel is a neat design integration, adding character. This wraparound LED taillight offers a visual balance with a seamless design appeal.

That said, the design characterisation can be found to be much more boxy and rounded (panelling) – to increase the storage space under the seat – this causes the design to feel a bit bulky visually. Also, the e-scooter does not get a centre stand, which can hinder the convenience factor linked to the design; it is not ideal when required to park on steep surfaces. The (rear) integrated footpegs on the sides are positioned awkwardly, which can be uncomfortable for pillion riders wearing Indian attire such as a saree. Moreover, the overall design is still practical.

Colours:

To further elevate the premium but simple design appeal, the Ather Rizta S comes in multiple appealing colour schemes that are unique to the Rizta S: Terracotta Red Mono, Siachen, White Mono, Deccan Grey Mono, and Pangong Blue Mono – all featured as a monotone colour palette. These colour schemes are meant to offer the Rizta S a visual sense of rigidity and stability.

Nonetheless, the Rizta S feels premium in appeal, with suitable design integrations to enhance the user experience. The Rizta S, compared to most offerings in the segment, is top-notch both in terms of design language and feature list. The fitment finish is another aspect that Ather Energy has got spot on, enhancing the feel and appeal of the Ather Rizta S to a large extent:

Build Quality:

The Ather Rizta S maintains Ather Energy’s reputation for offering scooters with structural integrity – all panels and chassis elements are high-strength, enhancing the vehicle’s reliability and durability. With strong chassis construction and balanced hardware integrations, the Rizta S is grounded and solid under operating conditions. There is nearly zero chassis flex with rider and pillion; this means the Rizta S is built for rigidity and stability under its safety-capped speeds.

Ather Rizta S Features

The Ather Rizta S comes with adequate feature integration to enhance the user experience; the Rizta S electric family commuter scooter is backed by the AtherStack OTA (over-the-air) updates for adaptability to timely software requirements to help improve the vehicle system stability. Unlocking the AtherStack Pro also gives access to the auto hill hold function and guide me home setup, call access, and music control functionalities. The auto indicator cut-off is another neat feature that is accessible by unlocking AtherStack Pro on the Rizta S by the manufacturer.

All said, the cluster system is not touch-enabled, meaning riders have to work their way through physical toggle switchgear; users have to go through scrolling to select navigation functions. Also, the switchgear feels clunky, and the system is slow. A live, fully fledged Google Maps interface is not offered with the Ather Rizta S, although turn-by-turn navigation is available. But the Ather Rizta Z gets. Nevertheless, the Rizta S has adequate features for convenience.

However, there are design downsides: the centralised 5-way toggle switchgear is small and placed closely, which can cause clicking unintentionally (accidental selections). Unlike the simple touch function offered with Rizta Z, the Rizta S uses such physical switchgear, which can feel cumbersome, especially when riding. Nevertheless, considering the pricing factor, the Rizta S is still one of the feature-rich electric scooters that meet the comfort and convenience factor.

Ather Rizta S Performance & Range

The Ather Rizta S is not only built to function with enhanced feature integrations but is also meant to be powerful and range-efficient to improve daily commutes to a greater extent. The Ather Rizta S comes with 2.7 kWh, 2.9 kWh, or 3.5 kWh battery capacities (options) paired with a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. This helps the Rizta S deliver 4.3 kW peak power and 22 Nm peak torque (across all battery variants). In terms of range output, the Rizta S can help churn out a maximum of 161 km IDC (Indian driving condition) range.

Thanks to the above powertrain configuration, the Rizta S from Ather Energy can register a top speed of 80 kmph, while acceleration performance to clock 0-40 kmph takes 4.7 seconds. The powertrain is also designed to prevent sudden wheelspins or jerky movement even while handling the load of the seated rider and pillion.

Additionally, the Rizta S is capable of climbing steep roads, offering a superb 15-degree gradeability. For versatility, the e-scooter also comes with different ride modes: Zip, Eco, and Smart Eco. The Zip mode unleashes full powertrain potential to deliver high-power and torque performance. The Eco and Smart Eco modes adapt to ensure high-efficiency performance.

Apart from these, for better efficiency, the Rizta S features an effective regenerative braking system. The regenerative braking system is designed to maximise battery efficiency. But while it offers better efficiency, the system does not function aggressively and dramatically weakens at slow speeds – meaning the setup does not bring the vehicle to a complete stop. Riders have to rely on the physical braking system to bring the electric Rizta S (standard) to a complete stop.

Ather Rizta S Ride & Handling

The Ather Rizta S is designed to be a planted, comfortable, and predictable family-orientated electric scooter designed to enhance the overall user experience. The Rizta S, unlike other sharp, track-focused electric scooters in the Ather Energy lineup, is designed to be plush and predictable. For these characteristics, the Rizta S is fitted with telescopic front suspension, while the rear is equipped with a monoshock suspension; these enhance the ride quality. That said, the front setup is slightly on the stiffer side (not as much as other scooters) to enhance its agility.

Additionally, with a heavy construction and long wheelbase design, the Rizta S is meant to offer rock-solid stability even with only the rider traversing highway conditions. With a heavier construction, the Rizta S also prevents being affected by passing heavy commercial vehicle-based turbulence that can affect scooter stability. That said, performing quick overtakes when at speeds of 50 to 60 kmph can feel a bit sluggish due to the same heavy-construction factor.

Ather Rizta S Safety

The Ather Rizta S is equipped with a disc brake in the front and a drum brake in the rear; these are considered to be effective, featuring a combined braking system. In terms of safety smart software elements, the Rizta S gets a side stand with a cut-off sensor system that prevents the vehicle from operating – a neat safety feature that prevents accidents from side stand contact. As for active safety elements, the Rizta S gets FallSafe, a proprietary safety element that detects vehicle falls, preventing motor function (shutting off the motor) to stop accidental vehicle runaway.

In addition to these, the Ather Rizta S comes equipped with tow and theft notifications, and find my scooter functions. For preventing rear-end crash risks during panic braking, the taillight flashes rapidly to warn vehicles behind during such braking instances. For battery management, the Rizta S is also equipped with a battery management system (BMS) that ensures thermal management.

While these are definitely neat safety tricks and elements, the scooter does not integrate an anti-lock braking system (ABS) to prevent wheel lockup under aggressive braking conditions. Especially when riding over slick oil patches, the lack of ABS can cause the vehicle to skid. One other thing that we felt must have been integrated is a headlight mounted on the handlebar cowl. With an apron-mounted headlight, there is momentary blind-spot buildup when turning.

Ather Rizta S Space & Comfort

The Ather Rizta S comes with a comfortable seating arrangement featuring a wider and longer single-piece seat; it offers generous room to seat two adults comfortably. The seat also uses well-bolstered, high-density foam to offer sufficient cushioning. The riding posture is also upright. The floorboard is also flat and broad, helping place feet comfortably with sufficient space. The floorboard can also hold small grocery bags and luggage comfortably. All said, tall riders can find a downside: the handlebar can brush against the knee when taking sharp U-turns.

Ather Rizta S Charging & Warranty

Charging the Ather Rizta S comes with convenience: the scooter can be recharged at home using the Ather Portable or Ather Duo charger; it takes 6 hours and 3 hours and 12 minutes, respectively, to recharge from 0 to 80% state of charge (SOC). With AtherGrid, the vehicle can be recharged for 10 minutes to get up to 15 km. What about a warranty? Ather Energy is offering a 3-year or 30,000 km (whichever is earlier) standard vehicle and battery warranty. Meanwhile, the charger warranty is 3 years. The Ather Rizta S comes with a strong add-on battery warranty to enhance the user experience; the Rizta S comes with a 5-year or 60,000 km battery warranty (whichever comes first). To further ensure that the Rizta S is a solid, family-orientated electric scooter-based investment, Ather Energy is offering an add-on package at a premium; the company offers an 8-year or 80,000 km battery warranty (whichever comes first). Hence, combined with a solid powertrain, the Rizta S is one of the most cost-effective and value-for-money electric family-orientated scooters in India.

Ather Rizta S Service & Network

The Ather Rizta S is supported by transparent app-based maintenance and is backed by a rapidly expanding service network to enhance and ensure a seamless customer ownership experience. Moreover, since the Rizta S uses an electric powertrain, maintenance is claimed to be on the lower end. The company is also offering service subscription plans to further improve the experience. But while the service network is expanding, parts availability in smaller towns can involve occasional waiting periods. Nevertheless, the service network of Ather Energy is solid.

The Ather Rizta S is meant for families that require a powerful but efficiency-orientated electric scooter for daily commutes. The Rizta S from Ather Energy is for customers who want to prioritise safety and comfort while on daily trips across the city. With IP66 motor protection, the Rizta S is a highly safe solution ideal for normal monsoon riding conditions. With AtherStack Pro features, the Ather Rizta S is a feature-rich electric scooter that is very useful for urban and semi-urban conditions.
