Intro
BMW continues to address the chauffeured luxury segment by unveiling the long-wheelbase (LWB) versions of the next-generation X5 and its electric counterpart, the iX5. These extended versions of the SUV, originally designed for China, are expected to enter the Indian market by 2027. After the domestic success of LWB cars such as 3 Series Gran Limousine and 7 Series, the arrival of the iX5 LWB comes as a natural development since, in India, there is a preference for extra space in the back seat of luxury cars.
The Extra Length and Design Changes
The defining structural change of the new iX5 LWB is its stretched dimensions. The wheelbase measures 3,165 mm, an exact 130 mm increase over the standard global model. This modification directly translates into more rear cabin space, serving owners who spend the majority of their time in the back seat.
On the outside, the SUV gets a distinct front fascia featuring a slim vertical kidney grille and new light signatures. There are slim wrap-around LED taillamps at the back end of the car, and there have also been some changes made to the bumpers to distinguish the LWB from the conventional model. Inside, the cabin features a minimalist design. The traditional dashboard is replaced by a layout that includes a central touchscreen, a unique four-spoke steering wheel, and the new Panoramic Vision system that displays information along the lower edge of the windscreen.
iX5 LWB: Powertrain and Range
For the all-electric iX5 LWB, the vehicle utilises the brand’s latest architecture. The SUV is expected to use a 141 kWh battery pack based on an 800V electrical system. This hardware allows the iX5 LWB to deliver a claimed driving range of over 1,000 km on the CLTC test cycle.
The electric SUV is anticipated to use a dual-motor configuration that generates a combined output of 578 hp and 805 Nm of torque. To manage the vehicle’s weight and ensure ride comfort, air suspension is provided as a standard feature.
The Plug-In Hybrid Possibility for the X5
In addition to the electric model of the X5, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the X5 LWB model range is also expected to be included in the range. The configuration entails the inclusion of a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine coupled with an electric motor that gives the combination a total output of 612 hp and 800 Nm of torque.
This PHEV variant is a good bridge for buyers wanting zero-emission driving for daily city commutes while reserving a combustion engine for long-distance highway travel without charging stops. The standard internal combustion options are also expected to be available, featuring a 400 hp 3.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and a 313 hp diesel engine.
