Volvo Cars India has introduced the EX90 electric SUV to the Indian market with an introductory price tag of Rs 1.26 crore (ex-showroom). As the new flagship for the Swedish brand, this three row e-SUV is built on a dedicated architecture, has a powerful dual motor setup, and gets a tech-heavy cabin designed exclusively for six occupants. Deliveries for the Volvo EX90 are scheduled to commence in January 2027.
The Volvo EX90 is the electric counterpart to the XC90, which stays on sale as a mild hybrid. It costs a bit more than that car, but it is also newer and better equipped, since the XC90 in its current form is more than a decade old.
Volvo EX90 Battery, Range And Charging
The EX90 pairs a 106 kWh battery with two motors and all-wheel drive. Combined output is 456 hp and 670 Nm. Volvo claims 0 to 100 kmph in 5.5 seconds, and top speed is limited to 180 kmph. The claimed range is 625 km on the WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure) cycle.
Charging is where the platform shows. The EX90 runs on Volvo’s SPA2 architecture with an 800-volt system and accepts DC charging at up to 350 kW. Volvo quotes 22 minutes for 10 to 80 per cent. It also says a ten-minute stop can add up to 170 km. On a home wallbox, a full charge takes about 10 to 11 hours.
Volvo EX90 Exterior Design and Size
Designers have retained the familiar Volvo aesthetic while modernizing key elements for the electric era. The front fascia highlights the signature Thor hammer LED daytime running lights and advanced HD pixel headlamps. A closed off grille and frameless outside rearview mirrors keep the aerodynamic drag to a minimum. The vehicle rides on dual tone alloy wheels and features C shaped LED taillights at the rear. Buyers can choose from six exterior paint options, including Denim Blue, Crystal White, Sand Dune, Onyx Black, Mulberry Red, and Vapour Grey.
The EX90 is 5,037mm long, 1,964mm wide and 1,744mm tall, on a 2,985mm wheelbase. Wheels are 21 inches, and air suspension is offered as standard.
Volvo EX90 Interior and Features
The cabin centres on a 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen running Google built-in, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A 9-inch screen sits behind the steering wheel. Physical controls are rare. Most functions live on the touchscreen. The rest of the list includes a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system, four-zone climate control, a panoramic roof with switchable transparency, ventilated and massaging front seats, a 360-degree camera, auto park assist, a digital key and a cabin air purifier.
Safety equipment includes nine airbags and a Level 2 driver assistance suite. In terms of crash test rating, Volvo announced a five-star Euro NCAP result for the global EX90.
Overseas, Volvo sells the EX90 with up to seven seats. India gets six, in a 2+2+2 layout with captain’s chairs in the middle row. Space remains solid though the rear seats lack the electric adjustment, ventilation, heating and massage the front seats get, and that there are no rear window sunshades. The third row is reached through the gap between the middle chairs, which do not fold.
Boot space is 324 litres with all rows up and 690 litres with the third row folded. A 46-litre compartment sits under the bonnet.
Volvo EX90 Pricing and Competition
The EX90 is launched in only the top-of-the-line variant, priced at Rs 1.26 crore, Volvo is offering a compelling introductory package for early adopters. Customers who book their vehicle before December 31, 2026, will receive an 11 kW home charger and a three year service package. More importantly, the company is providing a 65 percent assured buyback guarantee after three years of ownership.
The Kia EV9 commands a similar price bracket as the Volvo EX90 and seats 6 as well. While direct competitors from other luxury brands include the BMW iX and the Mercedes EQS SUV, which are essentially 5-seaters with a stronger emphasis on back seat luxury.
What SearchEV Thinks
Volvo is a small player in India, and electric cars make up about a quarter of its sales. Managing director Jyoti Malhotra, however, has said previously the company will add one electric car to the Indian range each year.
The launch of the EX90 marks a serious statement of intent from Volvo in the luxury electric space. While it commands a Rs 27.2 lakh premium over the combustion powered XC90, the technological leap completely justifies the extra cost. Interestingly, Volvo has also positioned the EX90 more aggressively against its primary competitors. For wealthy buyers seeking absolute safety, Scandinavian minimalism, and immense electric range, the EX90 immediately becomes one of the most logical choices in the premium segment.
