Honda Cars India is aggressively preparing to enter the mainstream zero-emission vehicle segment. Recent sightings of a camouflaged prototype confirm that the company has commenced rigorous public road verification for its upcoming 0 Alpha electric SUV. The test mule was caught driving on rough road conditions near the manufacturing facility in Tapukara, Rajasthan. The brand is targeting a commercial debut in the first quarter of 2027.
Honda 0 Alpha Electric Platform Architecture and Battery Specifications
The technological foundation of the 0 Alpha SUV rests upon a dedicated born electric architecture. Honda refers to this design philosophy as Thin, Light, and Wise. The platform incorporates a compact e Axle powertrain module designed to maximise cabin space while keeping the overall vehicle weight in check. We expect the SUV will likely employ a front-wheel-drive layout powered by a single electric motor.
Energy storage duties will likely fall to a Lithium Iron (Ferro) Phosphate battery pack with a capacity ranging between 65 kWh and 75 kWh. If the Honda electric compact SUV arrives with such large battery capacity, it would easily promise a claimed range of over 500 kilometres. The vehicle will also support DC fast charging capabilities that could potentially replenish the battery from 20 percent to 80 percent in about 15 minutes.
Honda 0 Alpha Electric Design Language and Structural Footprint
Unlike the rather unconventional design or smooth silhouettes seen on many modern electric cars, the 0 Alpha takes a uniquely utilitarian and boxy form. The exterior features a tall stance, a gently sloping roofline, and squared-off wheel arches housing aerodynamic 18-inch wheels. Spy images reveal an upright front fascia with a closed-off grille and sharp lighting elements. The rear section is characterised by a prominent roof spoiler, a nearly vertical boot lid, and horizontally mounted reflectors.
In terms of physical dimensions, the SUV seems to promise good interior space. The wheelbase is expected to be around 2,700 and 2,800 millimetres. This makes the 0 Alpha roughly 100 millimetres longer between the wheels compared to the existing Honda Elevate. Inside the cabin, previous spy shots have exposed a minimalist dashboard dominated by a large central touchscreen infotainment system and a smaller rectangular digital instrument cluster.
What We Think
The 0 Alpha represents a critical milestone in a broader strategic initiative for the Japanese automaker. Honda considers India a primary growth market alongside Japan and North America, with plans to introduce ten new models by the end of the decade. When the 0 Alpha finally comes to the Honda dealerships, it should expect a rather strong competition in the segment from rivals like the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Sierra EV, Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, and the Mahindra BE 6 on the upper end.
