Top 10 EV cars sold in Sept 2025, India sales dip 18% MoM. Tata & MG lead, while Tesla makes a surprise debut at No. 9.
The Indian electric passenger vehicle (EV) market lost tremendous momentum in September last year, registering an MoM sales dip of 18% to 15,048 units from 18,292 units in August. Industry experts are attributing the tax shrinkage to a mix of cautious consumers before festival seasons, and potential market digesting, although the industry shows a strong, buoyant 79% year-on-year (YoY) growth. This leaves a bright picture of the adoption in the long run.
Tesla’s Surprise Entry Shakes Up Luxury Segment
The big news of this month is Tesla’s sudden entry into the USA electric vehicle scene at the top 10 level. Despite high import duties and premium pricing, however, Tesla landed in 9th place by selling 60 cars, knocking Citroen out of the list. This marks the start of the highly generated rivalry between the giants of EV around the globe and India’s existing players.
Market Leaders Experience Contraction
Market dominance remained concentrated, with Tata Motors and MG Motors combined holding nearly 70% of the overall market share. The two companies recorded a contraction in sales volumes.
Tata Motors continued to lead the race by selling 6,082 units; however, the MoM decline dropped by 18%. The mark retains a commanding market share of 41%. For the company, EVs are a great contributor; they also account for 21% of total car sales.
MG Motors brought home the number 2 status with 3,843 units, along with a 24% MoM shrinkage. The success of its models, the Windsor EV and Comet, is still its major support for sales.
BYD and KIA Defy the Downtrend
By and large, two contenders have maintained a good level of growth over September 2025.
- BYD India climbed to the 4th spot, due to a strong 14% MoM growth with 541 unit sales. This company, widely credited for its good battery quality, is one of the companies that has a robust offering of features.
- KIA Motors was at 5th but just surpassed it; that was the sound launch of Carens EV and contributed towards 8% MoM growth and sales of 499 units.
