BYD is currently finalising plans to introduce its premium Denza brand to the local market. The Chinese automaker is likely to spearhead this entry with the Denza D9 executive MPV. Indian buyers usually lean on established names like Toyota for expensive mobility in this segment. However, wealthy customers are starting to look for quiet, battery-powered alternatives. BYD hopes to capture this exact audience. The company is looking at a festive season launch around Diwali 2026. If things take a little longer, the official debut could happen at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in February 2027.
Finding the Right Spot
Figuring out where a new luxury car fits is incredibly important. The Denza D9 will slide into a very specific gap in the current market. Right now, the electric MG M9 costs Rs 79.95 lakh. On the much higher end, the Toyota Vellfire goes for between Rs 1.20 crore and Rs 1.30 crore. The Lexus LM sits even further up the ladder, starting at Rs 2.20 crore. This leaves a massive open space right in the middle. BYD plans to place the D9 right around the Rs 90 lakh mark. This pricing strategy gives buyers a premium electric choice without forcing them to cross the one- crore barrier.
Engines and Battery Options
In other countries, you can buy the Denza D9 as a pure electric car or a plug-in hybrid. For India, BYD will focus on the fully electric version first. This choice comes down strictly to local taxes. Pure electric vehicles get a very helpful 5 percent GST rate. Plug-in hybrids face a much heavier tax penalty. Bringing the hybrid version right away would make the car too expensive to compete. The company might bring the hybrid model later once the brand proves itself.
Showrooms and Imports

Selling a Rs 90 lakh vehicle requires a completely different approach. BYD intends to bring the D9 to India as a completely built unit. This import strategy lets them test the market quickly without spending money on local assembly lines right away. Also, BYD will probably build exclusive Denza showrooms, keeping the luxury models completely separate from their current cars like the Atto 3, Seal, Sealion 7, and eMax 7. The biggest hurdle for the brand will be proving to buyers that their customer service matches the high expectations of rich buyers.
What exactly is the Denza brand, and what does this mean for our market?
Denza serves as BYD’s flagship luxury marque, positioned above the company’s mainstream offerings with a stronger emphasis on advanced technology, premium features, and upscale design. The brand is actively expanding its international footprint as part of its global growth strategy.
Bringing the Denza D9 to India is a huge step for BYD. The executive MPV space is already waking up with new electric models arriving. By finding a sweet spot below the expensive Japanese vans, Denza could attract people who spend most of their time in the back seat. The success of this launch will depend heavily on the dealership experience and how well the car handles our roads.
