Kia EV2 Globally Launched at €26,600; Brand’s Smallest Electric SUV Promises Up to 453 km Range,

Kia has globally launched its most affordable compact electric SUV (€26,600), the EV2, featuring advanced triple-screen tech, flexible seating, and up to 453 km of range.

      Kia EV2 Launched

South Korean automaker Kia has officially opened the order books for its most accessible electric vehicle to date, the EV2, across European markets. Positioned as a compact urban SUV, the new entry-level model starts at an aggressive €26,600 (approximately ₹27 lakh), undercutting earlier industry price expectations. The launch of the EV2 is a crucial strategic move for Kia, expanding its born-electric portfolio to greater adoption amongst budget-conscious buyers and urban commuters.

The highlights of the EV2 include a futuristic triple-screen cabin layout and two distinct battery options offering up to 453 km of WLTP-certified range. Flexible four-seat and five-seat interior configurations also stand out, giving much versatility in a compact footprint. While currently focused on European deliveries, the EV2 carries significant relevance for India, where its core architecture and design are expected to heavily inspire localised models, primarily the upcoming Kia Syros EV.

      Kia’s Most Affordable EV Globally

Debuting at the Brussels Motor Show in January this year, the EV2 is the most affordable model in Kia’s global EV lineup, significantly undercutting the EV3, which costs over €35,000. It becomes the brand’s sixth dedicated electric model, and the ace up its sleeves is its compact dimensions, yet segment-above interior room, and a refined tech-first EV experience.

The overall design also mimics that philosophy with a minimalist yet futuristic approach. The EV2 will be manufactured at Kia’s Žilina facility in Slovakia, and will be offered across four trims globally, including Light, Air, Earth, and GT-Line. Production of the Kia EV2 is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2024, with Air and Earth variants expected to be delivered first.

      Platform and Powertrain Dynamics

The Kia EV2 is underpinned by Kia’s dedicated Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which is the same platform that all its elder siblings utilise. However, to keep manufacturing costs competitive, it is backed by a 400-volt architecture rather than the premium 800-volt system seen in the flagship EV6 and EV9.

Globally, the SUV will be offered in two distinct battery configurations:

      • 42.2 kWh LFP battery paired with a 146-hp motor: Up to 317 km WLTP range
      • 61 kWh NMC battery paired with a 135: Up to 448 km WLTP range

Both battery options support DC fast charging up to 118 kW, allowing the vehicle to replenish its battery from 10 to 80 per cent in just under 30 minutes.

      Tech-First Cabin With Versatile Space

Despite its compact footprint, with a length of just over 4 meters in length, Kia claims the EV2 offers mini-MPV-like space. Complementing the stance are neatly styled wheels that range between 16 and 19 inches, depending on the variant. A standout feature of the new SUV is its flexible seating; the automaker is offering the vehicle in both standard five-seat and unique four-seat configurations. The four-seater layout features independent, sliding, and reclining rear seats that expand the boot capacity from 362 litres to 403 litres.

      Kia EV2 Interior

The cabin also embraces a minimalist design centred around the panoramic display that integrates a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen. The EV2 debuts Kia’s new ‘ccNC Lite’ operating system, which supports wireless smartphone integration and over-the-air (OTA) updates while retaining physical buttons for critical controls.

      Relevance for the Indian Market

While Kia India has not officially confirmed the EV2 for the domestic market, the vehicle’s specifications hold significant relevance. The Indian electric passenger vehicle segment is currently witnessing intense competition in the ₹15 lakh to ₹25 lakh price bracket. Even if the EV2 does not arrive on Indian shores in its current European guise, its core engineering and interior packaging will heavily influence the brand’s localised electric offerings, especially the Kia Syros EV. If eventually localised, an EV2-class vehicle would directly challenge established domestic players in the compact electric SUV space.
