South Korean automaker confirms the introduction of its luxury car, Genesis, in the Indian market amid rising demand for premium vehicles.
Hyundai Motor India aims to launch its luxury brand, Genesis, in India. Genesis’ most recent annual financial report for fiscal year 2024-25 states that it is “under strategic evaluation” for the Indian market. If approved, this would be Hyundai’s first straight entry into the country’s premium car category.
Hyundai’s bigger vision
The launch of the Genesis is in line with the brand’s ambitious goal to introduce around 26 new models by FY2030. This includes 20 ICE and hybrid vehicles and 6 electric vehicles. The brand plans to extend its footprint in India, especially in the mainstream and premium markets.
Targeting German rivals
There is no official confirmation, but industry experts state that the Genesis GV80 SUV will be the brand’s first offering in India. Other variants like the all-electric GV60 and GV70 may follow. The trademarks for the GV80 and GV80 Coupe have already been registered.
Genesis will enter a market already dominated by German manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. The GV80 would compete with the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Audi Q7. Hyundai is counting on Genesis’ global reputation for refinement, cutting-edge technology, and value-packed luxury.
Genesis to take the CBU route
Genesis vehicles will likely go through the CBU (Completely Built-Up) process first. Hyundai may pursue local assembly in the future, especially as its new Talegaon facility in Maharashtra nears operational readiness for FY2025-26. Local production could save costs while enhancing competitiveness.
The premium car segment in India has steadily grown in recent years, driven by changing consumer needs and preferences. Hyundai’s Genesis launch could shake up the current luxury car market and provide Indian buyers with exciting new options.
