Expert Verdict
The BMW i7 represents a significant design departure from traditional sedan attributes, featuring a high-performance electric propulsion system, complemented by BMW’s new-age craftsmanship. The BMW i7 bridges the gap between technological characterisation and unique craftsmanship. The i7 is true to BMW’s nurtured DNA, with digital architecture offering the highest luxury appeal.
BMW i7 Design
Exterior:
The BMW i7’s design is nurtured around bold characterisation, with a monolithic approach, but covering nook and corner with advanced design attributes, providing a significant butch-appeal. The i7 comes with the emphasis of this bold appeal, featuring a signature kidney grille design with LED illumination around the framework. However, this design approach has mixed reactions from users; it feels overly aggressive and polarizing, not to the taste of older-gen BMW sedans.
That said, the Swarowski crystal element integration and sharp LED lighting do provide the design with a sleeker and more luxurious appearance, true to its larger stance.
The muscular, sculpted bumper, with attributes like silver element integrations, while maintaining aerodynamically efficient construction and stronger and signature aesthetics, is also noteworthy. The aggressive sculpting, incorporating a longer front section, with the bonnet line receding but prominent, provides a continuum to its new-age design aesthetics. The side section follows:
The side profile maintains a subtle characterisation with minimal elements and larger body coloured and contoured architecture to provide a sleek but efficient appearance. The flush aerodynamic real estate manages to provide a cleaner stance; an approach that signifies luxury appeal. The portion also prominently showcases 21-inch alloy wheel integrations that are unique. However, the low ground clearance means the underbelly scrapes on larger bumps on the route.
Approaching the back end, the BMW i7 utilises an ultra-sleek LED lighting element, resonating with the rest of the design attributes as a prominent display of aggressive styling. Also, the subtle blue accents of the badging make the i7 stand out uniquely, carrying forward BMW’s legacy. The reflective red element integration on the lower bumper section is another subtle design addition.
For notching up the design with high-end luxury sedan appeal, the BMW i7 also comes in multiple colour schemes to choose from the palette: Oxide Grey, Dravit Grey, Black Sapphire Metallic, BMW Individual Frozen Pure Grey Metallic, and BMW Individual Frozen Tanzanite Blue Metallic. With these unique colour schemes, the BMW i7 is lass apart in appearance with every peek.
Interior:
Stepping inside, the BMW i7 provides its occupants a luxurious, ultra-modern, and sleek lounge-like feel; the interior replaces the use of physical switch gears with touch elements that provide a higher haptic level, with an immersive experience. The crystal glass-like attributes of the gear shifter and the centrally equipped glass house-like console elements provide a futuristic look. However, the crystalline backlit elements cause a reflection on the side windows, affecting visibility.
BMW has extensively used glassy elements, complemented by a textured layout to elevate the cockpit design in an attempt to make it feel like a high-end real estate— to dwell in comfortably. The dynamic faceted crystal cockpit is also supported by multiple other linear touch control panels for a unique user experience. The curved display section on the dashboard layout is a unique feature from BMW that complements the lower lateral touch screen layering integrated.
Towards the rear, the BMW i7 boasts an executive lounge, enhanced by the large panoramic sky roof. The comfortable seating layout also offers a captivating LED-based lighting design. To further elevate the luxurious design route taken, BMW has integrated a large BMW theatre screen synced to the roof elements; can be displayed and retracted when required. However, this can cause obstruction of the rear view for the driver, which is a bummer when driving on narrow routes.
Nevertheless, with up to 35 speaker integrations, the BMW i7’s front and rear cabin sections offer an immersive experience. Supported by high-fidelity surround sound functionality, the entertainment system offers a crystal-clear and dynamic surround experience. All said, the BMW i7 not only excels in cabin tech and gizmo integrations, but also in build quality and reassuring reliability:
Build Quality:
The BMW i7 comes with a solid architecture to maximise reliability; the quality of panel integrations, crystal glass elements, leather upholstery, and trim fitments is world-class. There are zero panel gaps on the exterior design attributes. Meanwhile, the luxury elements inside are also fixed and finished with premium-quality construction, meaning they are designed for a long-life. Overall, the BMW i7 steps up to the standards represented by the company for several decades.
BMW i7 Features
The BMW i7 comes with unique feature elements that make it stand out from regular BMW solutions; the i7 comes with an immersive sound system (BMW IconicSounds) which enhances the Hans Zimmer soundtracks, offering a sound, climatic, and lighting-based custom sync for mood. Speaking of entertainment, the i7 features the Bowers and Wilkins Diamond surround sound system; it offers a 4-dimensional sound experience, with 1965 W of power and 36 sound speakers.
Further, the door-integrated touchscreens are a neat addition that offers quick accessibility to the infotainment systems (controls and functions): a smartphone-styled 5.5-inch touchscreen. The tough display on the door section also controls the BMW Theatre Screen tucked away above. Other functionalities of the touchpad include controls to manage window blind operation, climate control, and media playback. Other than these, the BMW i7 comes with electric seat adjustments.
The rear left passenger seat reclines 42.5 degrees with a connected (gap-free) legrest; it extends automatically when the front left seat is moved to the foremost position. The seats feature appealing leather combinations too, customisable when purchasing the i7 from BMW in India. But the true purpose of the BMW i7 lies with its powertrain integrations designed for high-performance.
BMW i7 Performance & Range
Underneath the body, the BMW i7 utilises a high-grade, high-capacity lithium-ion battery pack integration to maximise torque and range performance to handle its extensive weight ratings. In fact, the BMW i7 available in 2 variants uses a 101.7 kWh capacity battery pack; supported by a high-capacity single-motor RWD, the i7’s eDrive50 trim produces 335 kW of power and 650 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the M70 xDrive variant produces more power and torque:
The BMW i7 M70 xDrive variant with a 101.7 kWh capacity battery pack and dual-motor AWD churns out 485 kW of peak power and 1015 Nm of maximum torque output. Thanks to this powertrain and drivetrain configuration, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive clocks 0-100 kmph in a quick 3.7 seconds. The BMW i7 eDrive 50 takes 4.7 seconds to reach 100 kmph from 0 kmph.
Nevertheless, both these performance variants provide good driving range performance; the BMW i7 eDrive 50 delivers 603 km on a fully charged battery. Meanwhile, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive offers 560 km on a fully charged battery. Note: Both mentioned ranges are WLTP-certified ratings. Moreover, under aggressive driving, the range does drop. Overall, for better driving dynamics featuring these powertrains, the BMW i7 gets an adaptive air suspension system, ideal for high-speed stability and ride comfort. These have controlled dampers.
However, due to the hefty battery pack, lateral body roll when cornering or while steaming down a turn is quite evident. Although the vehicle gets adaptive air suspension, which minimizes the effect, the physics of it cannot be overcome. Nevertheless, straight-line performance is superb by all standards established by BMW, meaning it is a high-performance vehicle.
Also, custom Hans Zimmer audio signatures are chimed with different drive modes chosen; drive modes include Eco, Comfort, and Sport. Although not a performance feature, it showcases the attention to detail that BMW has incorporated in its present iteration of i7s. Apart from these, the ride and handling performance of the BMW i7 is something to look at.
BMW i7 Ride & Handling
The BMW i7 range features an adaptive 2-axle air suspension system designed to suit different driving conditions and operating characteristics. The system is standard across all BMW i7 variants. The adaptive air suspension levels itself based on the road and undulations to maximize in-cabin comfort. With electronically controlled dampers, the ride is cushioned (carpet ride) for a seamless experience. This same factor enhances the cornering performance and vehicle stability.
Additionally, the BMW i7 comes with a rear-axle steering system – the Integral Active Steering. This system helps the i7’s rear steering to turn up to 3.5 degrees in the opposite direction at low speeds for a better turning radius; the i7 makes it easier to drive in urban conditions better featuring this setup. So, the i7 is a performance solution with superior ride and handling dynamics.
BMW i7 Safety
The BMW i7 comes with the best safety elements needed for occupant protection; the i7 gets full coverage airbags (7 to 9 airbags based on trims), including dual front airbags, front and rear side airbags, curtain airbags for the same sections, a driver knee airbag, and a front central airbag. The i7 also comes with ADAS functionalities to enhance protection; it gets adaptive lane-keep assist with active steering intervention, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, etc.
Apart from these, the BMW i7 features hill hold, hill descent control systems, tyre pressure monitoring system, and dynamic stability control systems, among others. ABS, EBD, and brake assist systems are standard across all trims. Additionally, the vehicle comes with a 360-degree surround-view camera for better visibility and a BMW Drive Recorder (Integrated dashcam).
BMW i7 Space & Comfort
The BMW i7 has a long wheelbase construction, meaning there is genuinely a good amount of space to seat occupants comfortably. The head, shoulder, knee room, and thigh support are superior in their class. The Seats are also well bolstered to prevent lateral movement. The vehicle also comes with a larger 500-litre boot for accommodating bigger luggage. That said, it is slightly lower than the internal combustion engine counterparts in the i7 lineup. Moreover, there is no front trunk (frunk) since it shares the platform with the ICE i7 series counterpart.
BMW i7 Charging & Warranty
In terms of charging capacity, the BMW i7 is top-class. The i7 with its complimentary BMW Wallbox, a 22kW unit, can recharge 0-100 percent in around 10 hours and 45 minutes. Not to worry, the vehicle comes with fast charging capacity too; with a 200 kW DC charger, 10-80 percent state of charge can be done in 34 minutes. However, when on long trips, the battery thermal safeguard can limit DC charging to prevent overheating, taking more time.
What about warranty details: The BMW i7’s high-voltage battery pack comes with an 8-year or 1,60,000 km (whichever comes first) standard warranty. If any part replaced by BMW has a functional fault for which BMW is responsible, the company will continue to offer a warranty for the replaced part under the existing. Additionally, a 24-month contractual warranty is offered by BMW for battery electric cars.
BMW i7 Service & Network
The BMW Group has a robust and extensive service network in India to manage vehicle-related queries and maintenance requirements effectively, with better turnaround times. The company operates over 30 service facilities and 50-plus sales and service touchpoints across India. The company has these facilities mainly in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities across India. BMW also offers dedicated EV service facilities with advanced diagnostics and technicians to attend to issues, if any. Overall, owning the BMW i7 comes with hassle-free ownership in India.
Who should buy this?
The BMW i7 is for those who need an ultra-luxurious sedan with premium, ultra-rich features and a theatre-like experience elevated by tech-enabled equipment. The i7 from BMW is for customers looking to establish a luxury appeal through a tech- and performance-forward approach that can resonate with their identity. For customers seeking high-range performance, the BMW i7 is the right choice.
