Expert Verdict
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive resonates as a high-performance electric flagship, merging sedan characteristics and M-specific dynamic cues with aerodynamic attributes, making it top-class. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive, featuring an aggressive stance, offers superior road presence. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive balances premiumness and luxury appeal with electrifying high-torque performance.
BMW i5 M60 xDrive Design
Exterior:
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive boasts an aggressive stance, featuring a forward-inlined sharknose silhouette, complemented by multiple design attributes; the fascia integrates well-contoured construction, with sharp vertical creases on the forward-leaning bonnet. The muscular bonnet attribution sees a continuum with an iconic kidney grille: The section hosts slats positioning prominent M-badging, supported by grille surrounds with illumination and sharpened headlights.
However, the use of more gloss black elements and a larger kidney grille, with a cut-out sensor radar housing, brings customers with mixed opinions in terms of liking. Some find these styling attributes to be busy and cluttered compared to older-generation BMW sedans made available in India. Nevertheless, the following enhanced attributes improve the appeal to customers as of today, featuring muscularity, while maintaining styling aesthetics that are contemporary:
The sharpened LED headlight configuration has a liking amongst customers, which moves away from the Halo-like lighting to a much more poised structure, featuring twin LED DRL elements. The standard LED headlights with an adaptive function for nighttime visibility also look cool. Towards the lower bumper section, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive also houses a glossy black treatment with a functional grille too, offering aerodynamic efficiency. With the lower side sections featuring aero ducts, the front end ties well into design integrations.
Coming to the side profile, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive gets a much more muscular stance; the section features hand-crafted exterior mirrors which have a carbon-fibre weave, striking to passersby. The sides also get a contoured design, with a crisp shoulder line elevating the sedan’s strong character. The high-gloss skirts on the lower section provide the i5 M60 xDrive with a sharper appeal, too. The flush door handles ensure that the BMW i5 M60 xDrive is aerodynamically efficient as well.
Additionally, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive’s side profile enhances its sporty and luxury nature with dynamic alloy-wheel construction and an M-sport braking system featuring red brake calipers. Towards the rear, BMW has ensured to carry forward the aggressive design characteristics; the sedan boasts an M-Sport thin spoiler with lightweight carbon construction. The horizontally aligned LED tail lights with narrowed LED strip integrations enhance the vehicle’s overall strong appeal.
Moreover, BMW has made sure the i5 M60 xDrive offers a high-performance in-cabin architecture to stay true to its aggressive characteristics, which makes the electric i5 M60 xDrive remain unique:
Interior:
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive has a highly aggressive trim integration to offer a strong M-badge-specific atmosphere. The cabin gets carbon-fibre elements integrated into the dashboard for sportiness. For exclusive M-badge-oriented luxury, the dash also features a seamless digital cluster and infotainment screen; these are blended into a single lateral screen extension with no splitting edge. They have a curved construction as well, with quick touch widgets for a better user experience. This section, unlike the exterior, is liked by customers
Additionally, the dashboard layout featuring crystalline elements finds continuity in the door panels, providing a unique atmosphere based on drive mode selections; the setup incorporates ambient lighting and offers around 15 colour customisation options. The touch-sensitive control panel on the dash for the climate control system is another neat touch, setting the i5 M60 xDrive class apart. However, we find the storage spaces to be shallow, especially under the central control armrest. The underfloor cavity of the boot space is not sufficient for carrying larger items.
Nevertheless, for the enhancement of the appeal, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive’s cabin features M-design deemed Alcantara and Veganza upholstery with perforation; we felt that this offers high grip and comfort. The high-quality material and bolstering offer the BMW i5 M60 xDrive’s cabin a pleasant and highly strong appeal, respectively. The M-Sport colour combined stitching into the seats’ bolstering neatly ties the cabin section. The high-grip and chunky leatherette steering wheel construction reflects its sporty nature, which we find quite premium in feel.
In the interior design department, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive manages to establish a luxury but sporty character, featuring the elements discussed above, ensuring they are unique to the i5 M60 xDrive. The electrifying cabin-design architecture makes the BMW i5 M60 xDrive truly unique for customers seeking a sports sedan that they can resonate with as a pure performance identity. However, keeping the crystal element neat can be a problem since it attracts dust and fingerprints. All said, the cabin feels like a place where occupants can be comfortable.
Build Quality:
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive does not shy away from delivering a strong appeal when it comes to fit and finish of trims and elements; these are made of high-quality materials to enhance the experience. There are minimal panel gaps and fitment issues, as expected from a brand like BMW that has set a global benchmark for the luxury passenger car segment. The overall construction is premium in appeal and designed for better reliability and durability. So, are the feature integrations:
BMW i5 M60 xDrive Features
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive cabin comes with multiple feature integrations to enhance the experience; the dashboard boasts a large curved screen with touch-sensitive navigation, minimising physical switchgear. Behind the steering wheel of the BMW i5 M60 xDrive, there is also an informative and dynamic digital display, complemented by a large central control display offering multiple functionalities; it functions on the latest BMW operating system 8.5 for an enhanced user interface. However, the menu and layering can be overwhelming with complexity.
The central control console also comes with an iDrive rotary glass selector, adding to its crystalline design elements. There are toggle elements too, complemented by a volume controller knob, quick access enabled ‘My Modes’; it is a performance- and efficiency-focused drive mode selector. For better comfort and convenience, the M-Sport seats of the i5 M60 xDrive are electrically adjustable. That said, the seats have aggressive or firm construction for sportiness.
Apart from these, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive gets an M-launch control system for a better track experience through better vehicle engagement; BMW asserts that a perfect launch is possible from a standstill using this advanced system. Like these aggressive elements, to ensure this character continuum, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive also gets an M-Aero wheel with a 940 M bicolour jet black wheels. Overall, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive is a feature-packed sedan for appeal and performance.
BMW i5 M60 xDrive Performance & Range
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive uses a high-grade 89.9 kWh battery with optimal energy density to maximise torque performance from the electric motor; the BMW i5 M60 xDrive churns out 795 Nm of maximum torque with optimal thermal efficiency, complemented by aerodynamic architecture and adaptive M-suspension integration. This configuration also enables it to offer 442 kW of peak power to ensure better accelerative performance; it clocks 0-100 kmph in an electric 3.8 seconds. But we feel that during heavy braking or cornering, the physical heft of the car is felt. The artificial acoustic performance also does not feel as dramatic as ICE engines.
Nonetheless, for high-speed stability and vehicle control, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive features an all-wheel-drive system supporting the dual-motor configuration. Thanks to this setup, the i5 M60 xDrive can clock a top speed of 230 kmph (capped speed). The sedan also prioritises high-range performance to be a practical solution for daily users: The BMW i5 M60 xDrive delivers 455-516 km/full charge as per the worldwide harmonised light-duty vehicles test procedure.
Meanwhile, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive is also tuned for ride control, supported by a low centre of gravity, thanks to the centrally mounted battery pack – underneath the floorboard. The 89.9 kWh battery also utilises thin prismatic cells for compactness to offer sufficient clearance. Additionally, the central fitment offers a 50:50 load on the front and rear axles, enhancing stability. Hence, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive is a performance machine, meant for pure torque output.
BMW i5 M60 xDrive Ride & Handling
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive features an active roll stabilisation function to reduce body roll and improve vehicle stability when strictly tackling sharp corners. The all-wheel-drive electro-mechanical configuration supports the BMW i5 M60 xDrive in ensuring this intended performance, while providing the required power in milliseconds. To further enhance, the i5 M60 xDrive comes with many stability programmes that come in handy when tackling corners. According to us, these do kick in and function effectively, although this sedan has heft.
In terms of ride comfort, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive offers a smooth and compliant ride (when in comfort mode) even when driving on uneven roads. In sport mode, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive adjusts ride height (lowers) to offer better stability and control at high speeds. With this functionality, the BMW sedan stiffens the suspension while enhancing the steering output for precision handling. Hence, it is right to state that the BMW i5 M60 xDrive is adaptable to multiple driving requirements.
BMW i5 M60 xDrive Safety
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive comes with multiple active braking systems to enhance safety under high-speed operations; the sedan features an anti-lock braking system, an electronic brake force distribution system, a dynamic traction control system, and emergency braking functionalities. In addition to these, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive gets a Level 2 advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). High-speed warnings, ISOFIX child seat anchor, and tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) are a few other safety features provided. The vehicle also has a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.
BMW i5 M60 xDrive Space & Comfort
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive comes with a long wheelbase measuring 5,060 mm; this means that the in-cabin space is larger, offering generous legroom. The taller construction also means sufficient headroom to seat occupants comfortably. The front seat backs are also sculpted, meaning more knee room for rear-row passengers. Additionally, the M-Sport seats feature bolstering, electrical adjustments with memory function, and adjustable lumbar support for comfort and convenience.
BMW i5 M60 xDrive Charging & Warranty
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive comes with fast charging capacity; supported by a 205 kW DC fast charger, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive can recharge from 10 to 80 percent in 30 minutes. Meanwhile, the i5 M60 xDrive charges from 0 to 100 percent state of charge (SOC) in 4 hours and 15 minutes using an 11 kW AC charger. The vehicle also comes with hypercharging, adding high range in under 10 minutes. Hence, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive is designed for long-range trips without range anxiety. However, when driving aggressively, the range does plummet modestly.
Furthermore, during ownership of the sedan, the high-voltage architecture comes backed by an 8-year or 1,60,000 km warranty (whichever comes first). BMW guarantees peace of mind during ownership, offering a warranty against cell defects, excessive battery capacity loss, among others. With such guarantees, owning the BMW i5 M60 xDrive comes with complete peace of mind.
BMW i5 M60 xDrive Service & Network
BMW Group in India offers an extensive service and spare parts network to maximise vehicle uptime and improve service turnaround times. The company runs over 30 service facilities in major cities, with over 50 sales and service combined facilities across the country. BMW has a major service network in tier-1 and tier-2 cities in India. With dedicated service technicians and EV-specific diagnostic systems, BMW guarantees better service experience for customers.
Who should buy this?
Unlike sedans designed to just enhance the rear-row seating layout with luxury, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive is explicitly designed for the driver, with performance as its driving appeal. The i5 M60 xDrive is built for those who need the M-badge performance, with instantaneous torque and a quick burst of acceleration. That said, this BMW i5 M60 xDrive does not compromise on luxury; it has plenty of tech-enabled features.
