Tata, Mahindra And MG Dominate May 2026 EV Sales; BYD Overtakes Hyundai And Kia

India’s electric vehicle sales maintained strong growth in May 2026, where Tata continues to dominate the sales chart. However, beyond the familiar names at the top where legacy manufacturers sit, the biggest development came from BYD, which managed to outsell both Hyundai and Kia during this month.

BYD sold 679 units this month, securing sixth place in the overall EV manufacturer sales rankings. In comparison, Hyundai Motor sold 445 EVs, while Kia India managed to sell only 345 units, and they were placed seventh and eighth, respectively. Here’s a table showing the sales breakdown:

Tata And Mahindra Continue To Lead

Tata Electric has been crowned again as the undisputed market leader with 9,743 units sold during May, nearly double the volume of second-placed Mahindra Electric, which sold 5,645 units this month.

MG Motors continued with a decent and consistent sales figure of 4,818 units, standing out comfortably ahead of the chasing pack, which includes BYD, VinFast, and even Maruti Suzuki.

Maruti And VinFast Build Momentum

Maruti Suzuki closed this month with 1,506 units, and it now sits in the fourth position in the overall ranking. We were also surprised to see VinFast at fifth, with 1,209 units. This is a significant validation for the Vietnamese brand, as it crossed 1,200 units, which shows its acceptance among Indian buyers.

BYD Overtakes Hyundai And Kia

While the top 5 contenders have remained more or less the same, a fierce battle was fought lower down the list. BYD India registered 679 units of its electric vehicle lineup, enough to secure sixth place and leave both Hyundai Motor and Kia India in the dust. The Korean manufacturers – Hyundai and Kia – sold 445 and 345 units, respectively.

We think BYD succeeded here because of its diverse lineup, which includes the BYD Atto 3, BYD Sealion 7, BYD Seal, and the popular 7-seater BYD eMax 7. But the Koreans have a very limited electric vehicle lineup, and hence buyers often run out of options to choose from.

While the volume gap may appear small compared to market leaders, overtaking two established Korean brands is a significant milestone for BYD’s India operations.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz Continue With Decent Numbers

BMW and Mercedes-Benz have taken up the final two spots in the rankings. BMW sold 345 units, narrowly surging ahead of Mercedes-Benz, who recorded 203 units. The buyer base for these brands is a niche one, and increasing sales also indicate that new buyers are now preferring premium brands instead of going for the mainstream mass-market ones.

Our Opinion

The May 2026 sales figures indicate that the Indian electric market is becoming increasingly competitive, and that too beyond the top three manufacturers. Tata and Mahindra still dominate the market with a large chunk of the total sales, but BYD’s ability to jump ahead of mainstream manufacturers like Hyundai and Kia suggests that the Chinese EV maker is steadily building trust among the customers in the country.
