Yamaha has officially introduced its first electric scooter for the Indian market, the Yamaha EC-06. With a claimed range of 160 km on a single charge, this is a key milestone for the Japanese company as it enters India’s rapidly rising electric two-wheeler market.
Sharper design with a modern edge
Although the EC-06 is based on the River Indie, Yamaha completely redesigned it. Some features, like the signature projecting headlamp, remain the same, but the overall design is sharper and more dynamic.
The EC-06 has angular body panels, a triangular side profile, and a redesigned front apron, giving it a distinct road appearance. The upper section of the apron is painted in black and features a vertically stacked LED headlamp, while the turn indicators are neatly placed right below the handlebars. A coloured LCD sits atop the handlebars and has built-in telematics and SIM-based connectivity for real-time ride statistics, diagnostics, and smart features – a first for Yamaha in this sector.
Powertrain and Performance
Under the sporty shell, a 4 kWh fixed battery pack is combined with a 6.7 kW motor, which is identical to the setup on the River Indie. Yamaha claims a top speed of 90 km/h, making it ideal for both city commutes and short highway outings. The EC-06 gets a range of up to 160 km of range (IDC cycle), and a typical house wall socket takes roughly 9 hours to completely charge, making it suitable for overnight charging.
Technological Features
The EC-06 gets three riding modes to balance performance and efficiency, a reverse assist feature that makes parking and manoeuvring in tight areas simple. Yamaha has also included 24.5 litres of underseat storage, enough for a helmet or a day’s belongings, making it one of the most practical scooters in its class.
Yamaha’s India Vision
The Chairman of Yamaha Motor India Group, Mr Itaru Otani, stated that India will be an classic location for the brand’s global business plan. The brand sees enormous potential in both the luxury and electric vehicle segments. The launch of the latest model, the XSR brand and the FZ-Rave, is an important step in boosting the reach and ally with India’s growing electric market.
He also added that Yamaha’s goal is to strengthen its relationship with Indian riders by combining design, performance, and sustainability, all while supporting the country’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision and Yamaha’s Environmental Plan 2050.
Expected launch and pricing
The Yamaha EC-06 is planned to be released in early 2026, with the Aerox E. The expected pricing is roughly ₹1.5 lakh (ex-showroom), competing with popular models like the Ather 450S, Ola S1 Air, and TVS iQube.
The Yamaha EC-06, with its sleek design, long claimed range, and advanced connectivity features, offers everything urban riders aspire to in a luxury electric scooter. If Yamaha meets its pricing and after-sales goals, the EC-06 might quickly become one of the most anticipated electric two-wheelers in India’s rapidly growing EV sector.
